You're about the tenth person I've recommended Meloche Monnex to and every single person has come back and said that their insurance premiums dropped SIGNIFICANTLY. I can't believe people use some of those freaky places like AMA and Co-operators. Those companies are total rip-offs.
And lest you think that Meloche falls short in the service end of things, think again. I got rear ended by some a-hole (actually, a good friend of mine... what are the chances) and we were both with Meloche (he was actually one of my converts). They had it all taken care of without ANY hassle. As far as insurance goes, there is but one Meloche Monnex.

I find it funny that so many people have said Meloche Monnex saves money...I'm a U of C alumni and I found them to be 200-300 dollars more per year than where I am now.

The u of c alumni rate was good but my work rate is better. Saved another $250/year when I was working for TD and now for SAIT.

I too checked out Meloche Monnex and what I would be saving ($50/yr) wasn't worth losing the long-term history with my current agency. I was using my SAIT alumni.

I've been with Meloche Monnex for quite a long time, and part of the UofC alumni group. I recently found out that my work has a group rate through TD Insurance, who are now like a sister company to TD Insurance Meloche Monnex (or whatever they're calling themselves today) and found that my insurance would go up by $20 a month by switching. Needless to say, it didn't happen.

I'm with Canadian Direct. And while the customer service there kind of sucks, 300 dollars a year is a lot to me so I'm sticking with them for now.

So ING finally called back and explained that my statement was in fact correct and basically I'm a 0, most high risk driver there is, and thats why I'm paying so much. I'm kinda peeved about the whole thing now. Having over a 3 fold increase from my already high rate doesn't seem fair at all. I'm actually confused as to why they think they can do that. How would they expect a 22 year old to pay that just to drive.
I know its fully my fault for being in this situation but I got insurance so I wouldn't be on the hook for thousands of dollars if god forbid I got in an accident. Whats the point if I just gotta pay it later and then even more???
Is anyone else fed up with stuff like this, generally speaking. Not just in insurance but there are many other places in our province where greed and business don't stop for nobody.
I guess I just gotta bend over and take it.

Like you said, you got yourself into this situation.
Do you think it would be fairer if your rates were lower, and good drivers had their rates increased in order to subsidize you?

Dynamic,
This might help you understand things a little better. But I don't get near what you are paying.
http://www.airb.gov.ab.ca/gridrate/
Assuming $1mil liability, under 3 years licensed, no driver training, 1 at-fault in 6 years, 1 at-fault in 3 years, 2 traffic safety convictions... I get approx $3000. Now, that doesn't include collision as well though, so I'm not sure how much that would increase it. These are your max premiums an insurer is allowed to charge you.
Use this calculator to get your basic then shop around. Once you find a place, ask how much collision will be on top of it.

Or that, but he's already said the car is his baby. I doubt he'll give it up.

my husband and i have to pay 700 for every 6 months of coverage or 1400 a year, so thats pretty similar to you. we just recently got 2 brand new cars and thought that might increase the amount we had to pay because they are both considered to be sports cars, but it didnt make much difference to the insurance. i was nervous that it might

I think it's more a gripe that he thought he was buying insurance, not an expensive finance plan.
If my math is right he would have had to repay the insurance company in one year, plus more for additional years.
insurance companies are scum. Unless you're a shareholder.

I don't think it would be fair if that was the case at all. I have no beef paying more for insurance when I start out. I don't even have any gripes about taking responsibility for the mistakes I have made as a relatively new driver. I sure liked having full coverage but I didn't know if I had to use it I would be screwed anyways.
My company was awesome when I had to make a claim, acted like they were on my side, but the renewal they sent me helped my understand the business side of things always is priority.
