I own all 3 systems. I would advise buying the 360 since the PS3 is an oversized blu-ray playing paper weight.. Sony in their infinite ignorance refuse to pay for exclusivity so low and behold there are hardly any games to rave about for PS3. I love my PS2 but the PS3 has been nothing but a $600 disappointment.

I thought the PS3 came with an HDMI cable?
I don't have a HDTV yet, so I haven't used any of the fancy cables that came with my PS3.
Also, if I where to go out and buy a new, larger HD for my PS3, would it automatically install the OS? Or is the OS stored on the firmware?

Pretty weak that we're talking about size of the HDD's when there is another thread in the forum touting the greatness of terabyte drives. 500 GB drives are pretty much dirt cheap now. Why are sony and MS pissing around with these tiny drives.

wow ... really have to disagree here.
SOCOM: Confrontation
The agency
MLB 08: The Show
Afrika
DC Universe
Resistance
Resistance 2
Warhawk
Uncharted
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank
God of War III
Gran Turismo 5
Hot Shots Golf 5
Killzone 2
Little Big Planet
Metal Gear Solid 4
Motorstorm 1
Motorstorm 2
That's not just a list I copied and pasted. Those are just the exclusives that I feel are purchase worthy (taken from a larger list). Half are out now and the other half will come out over the next year or so. If you have time to play that many games then you have issues.
I won't argue that the ps3 hasn't lost plenty of exclusives, but to say that there are "hardly any games to rave about" is kinda laughable.

Ya, no kidding. I loved Ratchet & Clank, and Warhawk dogfights were really fun. Little Big Planet, and some of the PSN games coming out, look really good too. There are very few games the interest me that are exclusive to the 360.

How the heck can you advocate purchasing a game that hasn't even come out? I wouldn't even give that recommendation to a Blizzard game until I had played at least 5 hours of it myself.
Personally I'd buy a PS3 as more of a nerd toy so I could attempt to turn it into a kick ass media player. The gaming system would be a simple aside that I probably wouldn't play around with much (Rachet and Clank? Heavenly Sword? no thanks...). The only game on the PS3 at the moment that even piques my interest in the slightest way is Resistance, but it seems Gears of War offers similar game play so I'm contented. That said, PS3 is getting Bioshock which is in my top 3 games ever played, but that kinda leads me into my main point.
This is a major thing to consider this round is that nearly all the big name games aren't locked into a specific platform (sports games, GTA, Rockband/Guitar Hero, etc). So purchasing either system will offer a near identical service. Sony's online service will eventually cost money (if PS3 sales ever pick up). Unless they have no plan to ever match Xbox Live's functionality...
I would recommend that you test both systems out before buying and pick the one who's controller you prefer. My biggest gripe with the PS3 is the POS controller it comes with. The Sixxaxis does nothing to improve the horrible design on the original dual shock 2 controller, which I never could get used to. The Xbox360 controller, on the other hand, is very comfortable with every button easily accessible. I use it as a my PC gaming pad as well since I've never seen better on the market.

Of those games I would only purchase GT5 and Resistance 2. I prefer online games and rarely ever play single player. If online play comes into the decision its hard to fault xbox live.

I wouldn't get a PS3 if your TV can't handle all HD resolutions. My TV is older, and can't handle 720p, because of this about 50% of PS3 games run at 480p instead of 1080i. The 360 on the other hand will up-convert, so even if your TV only does one of 1080i or 720p you will still get an HD resolution on all your games. This doesn't affect many people, but it's good to know if you have an older HDTV.

Yah, this is definitely based on personal preference, as I have the exact opposite opinion. I think the Playstation controller has been THE best controller ever for any game console. Its the perfect size, and the perfect combination of comfort and functionality. When the PS2 and PS3 were announced, I was pretty happy they kept the design of the original PS controller intact.
By far the worst controller I've ever used (besides the old 8 bit and prior systems) was the Dreamcast controller. The thing was bulky and awkward to hold. IMO, the Xbox controller and to a lesser extent the Xbox 360 controller are just a modified DC controller.

To each his own ... your opinion is valid. Sorry for being picky, but the difference between "there hardly any exclusives" and "there are hardly any exclusives that appeal to me" are two very different statements.

I feel confident that I can call a winner. I could very well be wrong, but I have absolutely zero reason to believe any of the un-released games mentioned won't be incredible experiences. Some people won't make a judgement until they play it with their own and that's totally understandable. Personally I feel that most of the huge games in the video game industry are seen from miles away. Oh and the next Blizzard game is going absolutely rule ... and you know I'm right!

How has no one talked about FIFA 08 yet for PS3? Greatest sports game ever made...
If you hate waiting for things of the internet, Memory xpress has dirt cheap HDMI cables as well. Funny story kinda unlrelated...When I asked the guy at memory xpress if cheap HDMI cables were that much worse than the expensive ones, he said to me 'It's a digital transfer, digital is digital'. *Laughs in the face of all those fools who pay $250 for Monster cable*

If you're thinking about getting it for bluray, the $100 between this system and an xbox is less than the bluray add on would be...If MS ever decided to do that.

Are you sure the 80GB is $399?
All i see is the 40GB for $399.

ps3 no question. Frik, the noise factor alone made me get rid of my 360. The ps3 is very quiet.
The Blue ray is super sweet and if your not HD, no biggy, you can adjust the player for regular vid.
the games these days are basically coming out on both and the funny thing is, the games made for the 360 that port to ps3 actually look better on the ps3 - that cracks me up the most!

It will be August 27. Also, be aware that as of now the video rental service isn't available in Canada.

Yeah, haha, Monster cables are just extremely over marketed and over priced. It's the only difference between them and the cheaper cables. It's like how a coat hanger can carry THE EXACT same signal as your high end monster cables.
This weekend I plan on putting Linux on my PS3, but I have to read up a bit more on it. I want to make sure it'll boot to my PS3 menu, and have the Linux OS as a switch option.
And I just picked up Uncharted the game is amazing.

They are in the process of allowing you to download movies from the Playstation store, and watch them right off your system. They are only good for a certain amount of time to watch though.
