The graphics on the Wii don't have to be so ugly. The worst offenders out there are developers who use motion-captured hyper-realistic animation with photo-quality textures and what have you. This category includes 2K Sports and EA Sports who seem to equate awesome graphics with awesome gameplay. That need not be the case.
There are some fantastic examples of art on the Wii in Nintendo first-party titles and others that were designed specifically for the console. Heck, even my Gamecube copy of NHL08 in the Wii looks better than NHL2K9. It's not awesome but it's noticeably better.
I suppose, then, that this proves an air of truth to the relationship between good graphics and a good game. While simply looking good isn't enough to make a good game, looking bad is sufficient to make an otherwise good game horrible.
