No one ever tips their financial advisor either. It would seem unethical to even consider accepting a gratuity. Just as you two above me, I get the odd bottle wine or lunch.

I guess I just get tired of seeing everyone with their handout. I mean honestly if everyone stopped tipping at all of these places with tip jars then maybe you would stop seeing the jars. I also agree with Andrew Coyne when he says (paraphrasing here) that McDonalds is arguably the best service you will get in the food industry and yet you'll never see a tip jar on the counter there.

I do agree with much that has been said, however if you want to see what happens if you remove tipping from the restaurant industry, go to France. I have never seen such rude, snooty waiters in my life. They wouldn't behave like that here, because it would hit them in the pocket book.

My best friend uses the "if I can't do it, I tip" approach (this usually goes for mechanics, cab drivers [he doesnt have a license], things like that). I don't usually tip bartenders--they twist a cap and hand me a bottle. Waiters/waitresses? Depends on my mood. I usually leave tips at Tim Hortons as well. There are a few restaurants I tip well at, because I've come to know a lot of the staff and like to see them do well.

That seems to be on the cheaper side in California, but it depends where you go. It's much more at a fancy hotel or spa. It's MUCH cheaper where I work..we charge only $56 for an hour or $35 for half an hour but it's at an aquatic therapy facility (kinda like a gym). The AWESOME package we have is called the Platinum membership, where you get

- 2 hours of massages per month AND
- unlimited use of the pool/hot job/classes (water aerobics or back classes in the pool)

all for 90 dollars a month if you sign up for a 1 year contract
or 100 dollars a month if you sign up for a 6 month contract.

We keep our prices low cuz we're non profit, but the 4 massage therapists we have all have extensive training and its the same massage you're going to get at a fancy spa. Becaues they keep their prices somewhat lower than most, they seem to get big fat tips!

The tips actually go to them directly, whereas the cost for the massages goes to the organization. Private massage therapists collect the entire cost of the massage where if they're working for osmeone else, they';ll either get paid by massage or get an hourly wage, so those people really appreciate tips compared to the ones who work for themselves or on a contract where they get the entire cost of the massage.

I get Rye, or Cognac. My clients mostly know I don't drink wine. Those that give me wine are giving it to my wife....

Being a former cook and server at a place that didn't have a tip-out, I agree that back of house can really suck. Then when I moved to fron of house i tried to do a voluntary tip-out to the BOH on anything that wasn't a terrible night.

Now, I tip 20-25% for great service, or if I'm not paying for the meal (gift card etc.), 15% for average service, 10% if I'm disappointed and 5% or less if the server is downright rude or completely incompetent and unapologetic.

Frankly, if I get s----ty sevice I don't care if the server thinks I'm cheap.

I once got a $50 dollar tip on a sandwich and coke order. Another time 100 dollars on a 40 dollar bill. That of course was not the norm. But pretty nice when I was 20 years old and dead broke.
