That actually surprises me, considering that teams have a shot at resigning their players pre-July 1. Why wouldn't you be able to select the rights? Interesting move by HO.
Plus, I never said I was credible... whitty, yes... credible, no.

This was a tough decision. I had my eye on another young player or two. I thought that Stafford would be gone ahead of me though and couldn't resist!
(Of course I wanted both Slava and Viktor...but there is always the UFA market to make that powerline come true!)

Great selection by Slava. Stafford was the player I had at either #2 or #3 (interchangable with Coburn depending on the need).

Yep Stafford I had 2 or 3 too. Now Slava puts me in a very difficult position...

Yeah, I really need forwards badly and I did consider Stafford. But I felt that Coburn has a higher ceiling and is a #2 and potential #1 defenceman. Stafford I see as a borderline top line forward/better second forward. Ultimately to me a top pairing defenceman is more valuable than a top line forward unless it's a number one center.

Stafford (former Sabre) was 2nd on my list, although can't fault the choice of Cobourn (former Sabre)
certainly 4 of my top 6 names are gone, not sure why I'm tracking this as I don't go until 16. maybe I'll nab Carsen Germyn (former Sabre)

With the Habs at #8 I am watching intently. I should be able to get a good player at that point still.

Even last year under the new economic system VERY few quality free agents hit the market...so this ensures at least a couple intriguing ones will.

If Coburn would've fallen to me (by some miracle) I would definitely have taken him. I almost think that this draft is harder than the normal draft. At this point you not only pick a guy but you have to pay him next season already!

Kolzig might be a risky pick, I could see him retiring.

Very tough decision on my part. Had to go with the 80OV goalie who is great in the sim. If he manages to sign with OTT or DET or something that would be amazing for me. If not I lose out on most likely a 3rd line, occasional 2nd line player.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, we are going for it this year.

Yeah but you add a highly rated goalie for nothing that can be flipped for something of much more value than Dustin Byfulin.
So calculated risk. I like it.

I don't think you can go wrong with this pick. even with an adverse re-rate you have a 1a/1b goalie ,

Kolzig is a competitor who has had a taste of the cup but wants another. He only has a few years left, so I think he will sign with a contender and try one more kick at the can. I can see Detroit or Ottawa both wanting to sign him.
Ravi, this was a gamble you had to make considering you are going for it this year.

I just wonder if he'll play this year though? Kolzig could be a phenomenal addition though. And really "nothing down and nothing a month...ya, I think I can afford that!".

that's actually why I traded Cobourn last offseason, at 1.8 M and a 69 OV I couldn't make use of him even though I would have rather kept him long term, but he should get a good rerate after really a turnaround NHL season

Kolzig is a sim god, and while his Washington days are over, he has publicly stated he would like to continue his NHL career. Should be interesting to watch.

even if Kolzig retires, IMO the one true impact player and the 2 great young players are gone....he's not risking that much, and the reward could be high

Someone finally gambles on Kolzig. If my team was set up better, definitely would have gambled a bit here. For 5.5 million I think he'll still rate 78 or so and we saw in the playoffs....you need a good backup if you want to play more than two rounds.
