Shows like Family Guy just solidify why Arrested Development is the greatest comedy series ever made

The writers don’t have to be offensive or use current events as catalyst for there humor
Uh, what?

I don't know what show you were watching, but Arrested Development used current events and pop culture references in their humour all the time (although not to the same extent as Family Guy). Remember the on-going joke about George Michael making a video just like the Star Wars kid? And while it's dated now, they also had numerous references and jokes about the Iraq Invasion, Saddam Hussein, etc., which was very timely political humour when it originally aired.

It's a matter of tongue-in-cheek vs. football-in-the-groin.

Some people prefer the former, others the latter. I would say that, on the whole, I would rather see comedy that is both smart and funny; though I do, every now and then, search Youtube for videos of people drinking shot glasses full of Dave's insanity sauce.

And for the record, when it comes to comedy, there is no line and everything is fair game.

hahahaha, that was awesome. that's crossing the line? i think people need to lighten up a bit. maybe i'm just an insensitive horrible person, but i don't think there's anything wrong with that joke. it's actually probably the only funny thing i've seen on family guy in a long time.

You’re right I should have expanded a bit more on my explanation

What I mean is that when they do use current events it is very discrete and is far from the central focus of the plot

Where as Family Guy uses current even much more often in a much blunter manner

Family Guy makes me laugh.

That's really the only measurement I use when it comes to comedy.

Oh that was funny. I'm a little annoyed that I ended up watching the Dallas/SJ overtime instead of Family Guy that night. Stupid single tuner dvr.

If you're looking for indepth satirical comedy then don't watch cartoons!!

They seem to add much more variety of humour too, i personally adore their surreal moments - makes you wonder if it's really written by yanks...

.. really?

clever? family guy? i like that show too man but.. cmon. lol. are you serious?

Meh, Family guy will always be remembered as the show that copied the Simpsons and did it worse.

Only by those that don't really watch both as there is very little in common.

I do find it funny though when all three shows basically have the same storylines covered. All three have done shows based on World of Warcraft. Oh wait - actually Family Guy hasn't but American Dad did.

I have to say I had a good chuckle at that and I don't think it crossed the line at all.

Just wanted to re-empahsize this point. Really, its funny to you if it makes you laugh. Family Guy is like any other comedy in that it does it for some, and it doesn't do it for others. Me personally, I love Family Guy. I also love Southpark, American Dad, Futurama, and the Simpsons (although not as much for the new ones).

Having grown up watching (and loving) Married With Childen, I guess I consider myself pretty low brow. I actually really liked that one show on Fox, War At Home. I never know when it's on though, so I always miss it. Did it get cancelled? If so then that's too bad, because I thought the show was hilarious.

Generally I don't find FG very funny, but that gag did make me laugh. I don't find that over the line at all, and it didn't really strike me as mean.

Overall this thread is just making me wish I could find more dvds of South Park here in Shanghai, and also of Futurama.

Family Guy copied the Simpsonss ironic humour and non-sequiteurs, two of the features that defined the first 8 seasons of the Simpsons as possibly the best TV comedy ever written.

Don't get me wrong, whatever they put off as The Simpsons now is pure utter garbage. In the ultimate twist of irony, after season 8 The Simpsons quickly turned into a show that the earlier incarnation mercilessly satirized. But, without those first seasons of the Simpsons, Family Guy is essentially nothing. You really can't believe that Seth McFarlane would have dreamt up that show out of the blue.
