It just became more accessible and easy to listen too
Back in the 90’s you couldn’t carry around a thing the size of your thumb that could hold a majority of your CD collection
It has its downside though
There is very little social interaction among strangers…everyone just puts in there headphones and goes off too there own little planet

Who complained? That is the problem you need to address. Needs of the many should outweigh the needs of the few. I would wait a week and bring continuing moral problems to your supervisor and find out if you can allow music for the last hour of the day or so.
Keeping overall moral up is more important than the one or two boo-birds who have screwed over all their co-workers.

Dot Com Boom/Bust broke a lot of office taboos in half. Also my generation came in and stopped tolerating garbage from companies that disrespect their employees.
The landscape of management has changed fundamentally since the late 90's. In order for a company to be successful, they need to employ smart, productive employees. To keep the employees productive, they need to keep them happy since they will turn and walk over to the competitor as soon as you start giving them guff. A healthy economy helps as well.
Heh, I just noticed your avatar is listening to her iPod.

I've been doing it for more than 20 years. Started with one of the aforementioned Sport walkmans, now I've got the 160GB iPod.

My avatar is high maintenance! iPod, cell phone, champaign class, pink shoes..
I like the more relaxed atmosphere that today's office is now. But you know that the people who run the show are still the old regime in their 50s and 60s who think it's impossible to work properly under these conditions.
As for you complained.. it's never known. Last summer we had complaints that the girls in our office were wearing clothes that were too revealing. The only thing i know for sure is that the complaint didn't come from any of your guys

How do you like the 160GB? I got the 80GB, and it's only half full (and I have a big music library of CDs, records and tapes). 10,000 songs.
I can't imagine needing 160GB, unless you are also saving videos.

I listen to my iPod all the time, unless I am at home. Even just to walk around the mall or the grocery store. I attribute it to my short attention span. Without music, I wouldn't be able to ride Calgary Transit that's for sure, the sound of people breathing in my ear gives me the heebie-jeebies. It's also great for drowning out the inane conversations you get to over-hear on a daily basis.

I loved my yellow Sony SPORT walkman. It had two headphone jacks so you could share it with a friend. I remember using it on my Grade 7 school trip to Victoria and Vancouver with two sets of earbuds, sharing them with three friends, while listening to Ace of Base (I've just dated myself there).

P.S. Yellow Walkmans ftw!

Did they ban music being played over speakers? Or all music including people listening through headphones?

Well I guess that explains the meeting with my manager tomorrow (at 8 AM sharp, no excuses!).
I knew I was in trouble when I got the first disbelieving looks on the LRT...

Oh yah, and people listening to music on their iPods or whatever is what finally pushed me over the edge into being sure that civilization as we know it is utterly doomed.
All the millions of people insulated in their little bubbles - I'm a friendly guy, so when I get on the elevator or into an office I'll say "Hi" and then at least half the time I'll be talking to Mr. or Ms. Headphones, staring into space, completely self-absorbed and oblivious to what goes on around them. 50 years from now this trend will end up just like in all the dystopic cyberpunk novels - everybody'll be twitching hunks of flesh hooked up to VR, bodies bathed and fed by robots and completely disconnected from reality.
Wait a minute - sign me up!

Just headphones.. we can have very low soft music for everyone.
We may just leave the radio on.

I remember carrying around my discman in my case logic with about 5 cd's in there and making sure not to walk where I might hit my discman's case, so it wouldn't skip.

Awesome....
If other people can hear it and don't like it, I can see the reason for not allowing it, especially if you're in an open cubicle with lots of people near. It comes down though to the culture of the office and type of work environment.
Do it once in a while and at a low volume = who cares. But if your cubicle becomes DJ ____ ___ on tour, there's a problem.

We have an open office, and putting music on with headphones is great for productivity. Otherwise, there's way too much fun and distractions.
I can't imagine not having music at work, I've always had it at every job.

Yeah, me too. I can't stand listening to "white noise generators", other peoples phone converstions and the phones ringing. I also have two guys that like to listen to their voice messages on speaker phone. When I hear that I get stabby.
