Well obviously I wouldn't go hiking in Arizona in the summer months... you can but you'd need a TON of hydration, sun protection, ect it'd be miserable.
But the heat is overated. It's hotter than balls for sure in the summer but you can still enjoy your patio like normal, and if you've got a pool all the better. (I have spent time in Arizona in late July in the past)
I'd take oppresive heat and AC over Winter any day of the year, Grey, windy, dark Calgary winters... no thanks
I've grown the hate everything about this town though, so I am jaded to hell

My lease isn't done until July.. Going in April to scout neighborhoods.
But 50% of the reason is that this city is just too expensive.. For absolutely no benefitial reason.

Yeah exactly.. I'd live in Vancouver if I had a choice because i'd like to stay in Canada for health care reasons but it's not economically viable to me... but that's another discussion in itself.
One house down the street 2 years ago was for rent at $1600, now today it's set at $2350...
I don't know how people survive in this town.

Well i live in Calgary and work in Vancouver for 2 weeks of the month. I have places in both cities and i am not sure how much better it is in Vancouver...certainly if you are younger (no kids) the rental situation is better, as there is lots to choose from (quantity here not quality)..you can expect a one bedroom basement suite near UBC to be around 800 bucks a month...(again nothing nice, but livable)..Vancouver allows home owners to rent out basements, so there are alot of places that do...but the quality isnt great...you can find some decent apartments on the west end of under a 1000 bucks...
If you have kids and require more, than you are stuck out in Pitt Meadows, South Surrey, Surrey or New Westminister....

Isn't that the one that the City of Calgary is spending $50 million to entice to Calgary? The one that Encana backed out from to hold in their main floor? The one that is really about showing pictures of past prime ministers? Like Trudeau? Yeah, that will go over real well here if that is the one you are talking about.
Would rather spend the $50 million on Hookers and Blow with a shortly lived follow up exhibit of the dead sperm.
What a waste of money.

Whenever I have some free time and have nothing to do I sit down and write down all the reasons why Edmonton is such a craphole
In seriousness though, I agree that there's very little to do in this city outside of the 2 summer months. The band/night scene is ok-ish if you're young and in to it, but what's an older, more of a fine art/food, intellectual or snobby type gotta do in Calgary? I mean Luciano Pavarotti and Sarah Brigthman concerts were viewed by people wearing jeans and t-shirts at the Dome. Doesn't scream "culture" to me and it was quite comical to see the crowd made up of extreme casuals and formal wear.
Calgary's disadvantage is the lack of waterfront which seem to attract a lot of entertainment. We also lack the absolute highest end of pretty much everything. We don't even have a 5 star hotel in this city.
Once we get some of the snobby places in order we will see more and more quality entertainment show up.
Flame away.

That was supposed to be the Portrait Gallery of Canada I believe.
The National Art Gallery in Ottawa is still fairly new, I don't think they'd be moving it any time soon.

I know others who agree with me and many who don't.
My wife loved it but she was only there for a short period of time.
I feel I have been there enough (10-12 time) for my opinion to be more than just a bad experience or two.

THAT'S the one.
Can't believe the money being thrown out to acquire it. Didn't hear there was something else potentially in the works.

Not saying there's no culture in Calgary, that'd be an impossibility in a city this large but it's definetely peanuts to real world class cities.
Not only that but there's not much to do in this city to be active, we only have The Flames... It's too cold, windy, ugly 8 months a year...
I'm moving to Phoenix this summer (When it's a cool 110 F.. eek) and while it's not a cultural hotbed like Paris there is so much to do year round. Every level of sports imaginable, weather good enough to go running every day, hiking all year round, alot of great patio's to relax at YEAR ROUND.
If you've lived in Calgary long enough, it's a very, VERY boring town unless you enjoy the bar/pub scene.
Yeah it's all good. Don't worry about it.
But you know that feeling when you go to a place like Paris? You're on another planet almost... Maybe i've just lived in Calgary too long but I can't find that in this city anymore even Vancouver as I mentioned.. go to Robson in a Summer evening and it's Bustling! Calgary can't even hold a candle to that outside of Stampede... and even then, not so much.
|
I gotta go so I'm going to see if anyone has broken the obvious to Sarich but uhhh, As much as people make a point of not being outside in Cgy for 4 months of the year ... same with Phx. Just different months.
I travel a fair bit and outside the obvious citys like Mtl, NY, Chicago etc culture for the most part is a function of people attitudes. And if anything I'd say that it's attitudes like yours are the only thing about Cgy culture that is bad. Just curious, what exactly are you expecting the culture to be like in Phoenix.
Oh and tell ya what, when you get down there, roll around downtown after 630 and report to us that downtown Phx is NOT a ghost town.

Well the reason is because a lot of people have decided they want to live here - which is what pushes costs up.

Have fun in PHO, Gord. Lemme know what the 'culture' is like down there. Maybe they'll have sombreros instead of cowboy hats?
Watch out for Lanny. He's got a mean streak.

Culture? Well, now, let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means ... I know what you think it means, sonny. To me, it's just a made-up word. A elitists word, sonny. Young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie and go to a play or a fancy dinner party. What do you really want to say? That you're better than me? ... There's not a day goes by I don't feel bored. Not because I'm here. Because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then. A young, happy kid who went to bars, drank a lot, did some blow. I wanna talk to him. I wanna try to talk some sense to him. Tell him not to stop. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man's all that's left. I gotta live with that. Culture? That's just a bullshiz word. So you go on and go to your opera, play, or live band, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because, to tell you the truth, I don't give a shiz.

Because there are jobs here, which is nice but with the higher wages comes a higher cost of living so it's pointless.
I can't wait to GIT OUT.
Also i'm not saying Phoenix is a cultural hotbed, but there's easily more to do.. especially if you're a sports fan.
and it's like 5 hours to L.A. How many times can I experience Radium, Banff, Vernon, Kelowna in my life? Bring on L.A. San Diego, Peurto Penasco Mexico, and so on.
