It's so funny when people start citing "laws" as their justification for thair holier than thou attitudes. Just like it's against the law to slow down really slow, but not actually stop at that stop sign in the middle of the night. Or do the same thing at a right turn on a red light.
I should stake out the 4 way by my place and run out in the street and MAKE people stop because it is the law.
edit to add taht ken's post came later and his 'law' post is not being discussed

Slower traffic means big ass trucks and RV's going significantly UNDER the speed limit. A regular vehicle going the speed limit doesn't count as slower traffic.

Tell that to the old folks that drive under the limit. The other day there was this older chinese couple doing 80 kms on the Deerfoot. Other drivers were weaving in and out of traffic to pass these asshats.
Big ass trucks are often the ones speeding. They often do 120 kms or higher. Cripes you should see them speed on the highways.

One of the laws on the books is that you can be fined for obstructing the flow of traffic, regardless of speed. So, are you going to pick and choose which LAWS you wish to obey, or do you move over, when it is safe to do so, and allow the person behind you to pass?
Incidentally, impersonating a police officer is also a crime. It is not your job to enforce the speed limit.

I hate traffic as much as the next guy, but some people worry about this stuff way too much.
If you drive 20 km down Deerfoot at 100km/h, it will take 12 min.
If you drive 20 km down Deerfoot at 80km/h, it will take you 15 min.
Other than principle, why does this matter so much?

It doesn't matter where I am going or if I'm running late or not, but I need to get there as fast as possible.

For me, it's because I like to be in a nice, open space. It's not about going twice as fast as people. It's about not wanting to be stuck behind 3 ######s all going the same speed, when there's a nice, open area in front of them.

Why do you people poke this man with a stick? Why?
He is very close to killing me, either cut him some slack or get him first. I dont particularly care which one.
I'd prefer slack. I've met him, and I think 1 on 1 in a knife fight I'd put him in CP's top 1 percentile.
And for the record, if theres 3 or 4 slow walkers shoulder to shoulder I usually throw something at them and when they turn to fight me I shoulder through their formation and proceed to my destination at speed.
It worked against the Roman Phalanx, it'll work against their close-walker asses!

I looked it up, and what I was thinking of is a highway regulation, not a city one, so apparently it wouldn't apply.
Though the rest of my post still applies. It isn't for some a-hole to dictate the speed other drivers go.

No, you were right the first time Resolute. The offense is contained in the 'Use of highway and rules of the road regulation', but that doesn't mean it's restricted to only highways.
It's called 'Slow driving impede/block traffic' and it's $115

In the famous words of Ludacris... "Move bitch, get out the way, get out the way bitch, get out the way."
Honestly, if you go in the left lane and then go slow you are asking for karma to bite you in the ass. If you think that ethics don't matter because only laws do, then wow is all I have to say. That will get you only so far in life.... and only so far on the road :-P
Don't drive slow just to piss off the fast drivers, because that means as a slow driver (who is of course a million times safer, smarter, and law-abiding citizen) you are "stooping" to the level of us dangerous, dumb, scum of the earth type criminals who like to get places fast. Get over yourself and quit being a slow-driving elitist.

The guys who drove at exactly the speed limit beside each other on the 401 in Ontario, not only got fines, I believe they got (short) jail time.
The reason why you let people pass you, even if you are going the speed limit, is that because, if you don't traffic can get all bunched up in a clump, and that's when accidents happen.
The guy going speed limit at the front may not ever get in an accident himself, but he sure can't claim that he's not the cause (partial of course)of any accidents.

There should be a minimum speed enforced on freeways such as Deerfoot Trail.

Agree completely.
OT: I prefer the US system that has a minimum, maximum and maximum speed for truckers. Nothing is worse than a trucker passing another 18-wheeler only doing 115 on the #2.
In many states it's 75, min 45, trucker max 55, IIRC.

i just got done watching season 3 of Canada's Worst Drivers, and there were 2 Calgarians on there, 1 from Medicine Hat, and 1 from rural Alberta. i'm noticing a severe over abundance of Albertans on this show, as the last two seasons have also had at least 2 people from Calgary on them, and everytime they're some of the worst candidates on the show. i enjoy watching the show as it's always entertaining to see stupid people being told they're stupid, but after every episode i have to cringe a little bit when i realize that i have to share the roads with these rejects
but i have to say after watching the latest pride of Calgary, Shelby, on season 3, i'm all for drastically upping the requirements needed to pass the drivers exam

Based on the Regulation 304/2002:
2(1) A person shall not do any of the following:
(b) where a highway that is located outside an urban area has 2 or more traffic lanes on the same side of the centre line for use by vehicles travelling in the same direction, drive a vehicle in the traffic lane nearest the centre line unless the vehicle is being driven at or near the maximum speed permitted;
(c) Notwithstanding subsection (1)(b), a person driving a vehicle on a highway at a speed that is below the maximum speed limit that is established or prescribed for that highway may drive the vehicle in the traffic lane nearest to the centre line for the purpose of overtaking and passing another vehicle.

There is nothing, I repeat, nothing against the law about driving the speed limit in the left lane, even if there is a "slower traffic keep right" sign. Period, end of story.
To Resolutes repeated (and correct) offering, it is about courtesy... to allow the speeders through.
And to You Need a Thneed, I would be interested in a link to the story you are indicating. Ontario very well may have some different laws.

^^^Ok, I must have missed the "regardless of speed" in Resolute's original post regarding this issue.
You're right of course. If someone is doing the speed limit, there's no way they would get a ticket if they were in the left lane, no matter how much traffic there is.
I was simply stating that there is indeed an offense for going too slow and obstructing traffic.
