If I don't know how to do something, and I know that buddy beside me who's been in the industry for 28 years does know how to do it, you bet your ass I'm going to ask him to show me step by step how to work through the problem. Why would I waste my time and the company dollar just so that I can feel proud of myself for figuring something out?
I'm an engineer, and I can tell you, a lot of my design is basically copying designs that I, or others, have completed before. It's not exciting, but the fact is, it's cheaper for the company, and it's a pretty easy way to learn for the next time.
