That was a much better format because it was just raw, and it was just personal - only people that you had as other post-secondary friends could see it. Nothing fancy, just a neat little idea. Granted, other people had to use it to make it effective, and I guess that's what happened.
The apps are the worst part of Facebook now; except for one - LOLCats. That's the only one that I have, and it's always moar den worf it k thnx bai.

I think its inevitable that its like that. Any time something becomes an influential part of your life, there is always going to be disdain at the thought that it is taking away your "freedom". Be it parents, a girlfriend, hookers and blow..........whatever. They all have positives and for better or worse make life better, but the idea of something else having control of you just doesn't sit right.

Here is a realization I had about facebook it’s easy to calculate how big of a loser someone is, you take there total number of applications (find this out by counting all the little boxes under there picture) and divide it by the number total number of wall posts they have and bam loser level…if you are over 1 that sucks
# of applications you have x 100 = Loser Level
# of wall posts
I'm a 0.6526

AHAHAHA I'm at 0.8.... altough I don't know if one should count the Wall, Photo, Notes and Education and Work icons. Those come standard with an account, and are actually useful. Without those, I'm at 0.27!

he is only worth that because of newscorps genius in purchasing myspace
then siging that 1.5 bil advert deal with google. Also partnering its complete media properties with Myspace has also added to the myspace popularity.
until Fb can monetize its stream then it isnt worth anything. And the problem is that monitizing that section could be death if users dont like it and then pull out.
As with many other I only use Fb to post important announcements to friends.
I am very proud to have 9* the amount of freind denials than I do actual friends (17)
Note - if I went to highschool with you and we wernt friends their and we arent friends now then why the hell would I want to add you to Fb. Geesh.

I thought about this but figured at some level you are a loser for using facebook so they need to be included
The worst I have seen after doing some browsing in my friends list is 4.4484

Very true, but I guess this implies that you're cool if you don't use it at all, ie. no account? What if you just go on to check pictures from friends outside the country? It's a legitimate reason to go on, I think so anyways
There's also another flaw in your calculation: A Loser Level decreases with more wall posts, after doing the calculation. More wall posts should imply that you're using facebook waaaaay too much, and are therefore more of a loser than what your calculation implies.

You make a good point here but my thinking is that if you use facebook and have a large number of walls posts it implies that people want to talk to you have you have pretty large social group even tough you use facebook a lot
However on the other hand if you have a lot of applications and a low wall post count than that implies that you use facebook a lot but none wants to you talk to you

Ahahaha, you make good points as well, agreed on all accounts!
The fact that people want to talk you is always a good thing... unless you're talking to them first and they're just responding to you out of courtesy. People have to actively want to talk to you if you want to decrease your Loser Level

J pold, that calculation is genius!
I'm a 0.66...so you're only slightly cooler than me. :P
10 applications (Hockey Pool, Flames Fans, Snow Reports)
Should try to figure out a way to include the amount of friends you have in the calculation too.

I must be the coolest guy in the world, since my loser level is 0.0.
I don't have a single third-party app installed (if it's not part of the default Facebook profile, I don't want it) and I have 38 wall posts.

Hey default is part of the deal because as stated above on some level if you have facebook you are a loser
Which means even if you only have 3 default applications that means your loser level is 7.8947!!! dude get some walls posts going

This is another thing I hate about Facebook. I swear for so many people its just a race to see who can have the most friends/wall posts on there. I was PM'ing a girl I know who's a little younger than me on there, and she asked if I could stop PM'ing her and just write it on her wall, to increase her wall posts, thus making her look cooler. She seriously said "so it makes me look cooler". And my little cuz who's 17 just got on it and was bragging because he has a higher friends list than me(he's at over 100, I bet he talks to maybe 12-15 of those people).
I wish I wouldve discovered Facebook when it was a post-secondary students only type thing, with none of the Chuckie Cheese applications. It actually sounds like it used to be pretty cool at one point...

It was, at one point. Now it acts as a ized mail application, just checking the inbox and such.
It's excellent for one thing though - keeping in touch with overseas friends. I find the farther away someone is, the more willing I am to look at their page. Comparatively speaking, I could care less what my next door neighbour is doing.

I just purged everybody I don't talk to, regardless if we were friends or not. I couldn't care less about 'being cool', and I'm 24. Seriously, it was much more 'cool' I guess, when it was in its early stages and only students and alumni could access it.

I just checked the worst person on my "friend's" list...120.9 by J Pold's formula.
43 wall posts....52 applications...that's gotta be some kind of record. Seriously...what possesses people to add and use all of these stupid applications?

people talk about "social networking" sites coming and going, but I never signed up for friendster or myspace or anything like that. Facebook has infected the casual user. People who normally don't do internet geeky stuff use it and I think it'll be around a reasonably long time.

What you just described is that facebook has crossed the chasm. Where myspace and friendster were only able to capture the early adoptors of the market, facebook has been able to cross the chasm to bring in everyday joe. Having all those contacts and organizing them takes alot of time, and I don't see the "non-geeks" having the patience to move onto another social networking service to organize their social networks.
The applications are annoying, but facebook is here to stay. At least until a universal contact organizer that Microsoft bought is able to cross the chasm.
