I am such a homer, but I'll say Pete Townsend from The Who. Saw them in concert again in September and at age 61 or whatever he is, he still brought goosebumps to my whole body. Unfricking-believable. I miss good music.....

Gotta put John McLaughlin on the list of greatest guitarists ever.

It all depends on what style you are looking at. If you look at Rhythm players there are very few who are as creative and proficient as Pete Townshend, but when it comes to lead guitar he is not that great.

Well, as for current living guitarists I would have to say that it's a toss up between Jack White and John Frusciante. But here is a list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time as picked by Rolling Stone magazine...

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...s_of_all_time/
Quote:
1Jimi Hendrix
2 Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band
3 B.B. King
4 Eric Clapton
5 Robert Johnson
6 Chuck Berry
7 Stevie Ray Vaughan
8 Ry Cooder
9 Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
10 Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones

Mickey Baker at 53 on that list.

I've recently discovered this cat. Backed up a lot of soul artists back in the day. An album of instrumentals was recently re-issued and worth a listen.

That list is junk and should not be taken seriously. Also, while I can see Jack White as a creative individual, I believe his guitar skills are lacking. Frusciante blows him out of the water.

JASON BECKER reigns supreme! (Incredible Precision and with a side of beautiful melodys He has been compared to that of Beethoven and Bach, for composing abilities!!!!

Hard to believe he was this good before he was 21!

Joe Satriani( he basically taught all of the major shredders!)
Greg Howe ( Incredible left hand legato Technique)
Jimi Hendrix ( The innovator)
Jeff Beck ( Outstanding Hybrid Picking style infused with new age whammy-bar techniques)
Robert Johnson ( the Blues King, no one can play his music "properly")
Lee Ritenour( Greatest jazz Guitarist i have ever seen)
Eric Clapton ( Clapton is King)
Justin King ( Incredible acoustic slap techniques, he brings out harmonics where you would not expect them!)
Fahem( Most melodic and precise Flamenco picker i have ever seen!)
Ritchie Blackmore

But they both do not match up to ritchie kotzen or John Mayer, not to mention Eric Johnson!

Joey Santiago is brilliant on Vamos. Don't mean to derail the thread, but are into Black Francis' solo stuff? His latest, Bluefinger is pretty good. He's got a new album coming out on March 3 called "Svn Fngers"

How about J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr? I don't think he's the best guitarist of all time but he deserves a mention.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think Buckingham was even the best Fleetwood Mac guitarist. Peter Green was better than Buckingham IMO.

Good point, but I'm amazed by Buckingham's finger picking - wish I could play like that. Very under-rated guitar player.

Heck, I wish I could play like Randy Bachman even, and I consider Bachman somewhat steam-aged.

Nottingham certainly has talent ... I'm just a Peter Green fan and try to stick up for him whenever I get a chance.

Ween wrote a song called Buckingham Green:

A child without an eye
Made her mother cry
Why ask why
She kept her child clean
On Buckingham Green
The children saw the eye
As a sign from God
Descending from the sky
It was alright to dream
Of Buckingham Green
Summon the Queen
Spoke the child of eye
It's time to fly
Turning fire to steam
On Buckingham Green
