I haven't actually seen a Dane Cook movie, but I have to admit to finding him funny. He's like that guy at a party that doesn't really tell jokes but tells funny stories. While many people seem to despise his comedy, I'm more confused by the amount of anger directed towards him. Really, what has he done that warrants so much attention? I did see a youtube of a joke he stole which I can understand is a valid reason to target him, but beyond that I just don't really get all the hostility.
edit: Oh, the Bob Sagat comment about him fingering kimmy gibbler made me laugh in an unnatural yet wonderful way.

You at least have to have some smarts to get Lewis Black jokes. A 12-year old probably feels dumbed down after listening to Cook.

i realize they are not really similar comedians, but i have heard people use the comment about him always having to scream to be funny. though i, and apparently you, find him funny, there are of course some people that don't, and for them i could see a conclusion being drawn.

I guess if the loudness part is what bothers people, then yes I could see that being why they wouldn't like either. For me though, that isn't it. If anything, I actually find that funnier(possibly stemming from me loving Chris Farley growing up), which is probably why I get such a kick out of Black.
I really can't put my finger on what it is about Cook that I hate so much(aside from the fact that he stole jokes from one of my favourite comedians; Louis CK, and ironically at the same time is supposed to be incredibly confrontational with other comedians if he thinks they're trying to rip him off), everything about him just screams giant dousche to me.

I think it's funny that Dane Cook is basically the Nickelback of comedy.
Everyone claims to hate him, but somehow he keeps selling millions of albums.
So who's buying his stuff.
That being said, I do like Dane Cook and I hate Nickelback.

Really, you hate Dane Cook but you love Chris Farley.
At least Dane Cook can tell a good story and has some structure to his act.
Chris Farley is just a loud fat A*****E who falls down a lot. NOT FUNNY.

Ya humour was alot different in the early-mid 90's, humour is such a generational thing. If Farley came out now with the same gig he'd probably have a tougher time with it. Also keep in mind that when Farley was popular, I was 11-15, so that stuff probably appealed to me more than it would to an adult at that time. So when I watch him now, I still love it probably because it takes me back to being a kid.
There was something about Farley though that was just timeless. He had the ability to make anyone laugh, even if they're not big on physical comedy. And I thought he could also be funny out of that "fatty falls down" role as well, he unfortunately just got typecast in it(which if you read his book, was one of the main reasons for his depression and eventual downfall. Its quite a tragic story actually). His more reserved "The Chris Farley Show" gags were gold.

People don't like Dane Cook because he's a ######. He's the obnoxious frat boy at a party who wants everyone to hear him so he yells all night, and occasionally in his constant blabber says one thing deserving of a chuckle.
I don't like guys like him in real life, so I'm not about to in a movie.

I've never found the appeal of Dane Cook. I just can't find him funny.
Lewis Black and George Carlin, however... really funny! Especially the former. I didn't know you could be intelligent and delusional at the same time.

Cook's stand-up is mostly Schtick - he stalks around the stage, bobs his head up and down and smiles a lot. He's emphatic and his gestures are odd. He's that gregarious jock at parties that everyone likes even though he doesn't say or do anything remotely interesting or original. It's almost all in the delivery and the cadence. The material is secondary.
I watched his 2 hour special the other night, out of curiosity. I think there was about 20 minutes of actual *jokes* in it. A lot of it was asides, needless anecdotes that took too long to deliver, mugging for the crowd and re-iterating of obvious punchlines.
I think he'll have his day in the sun and will fade into obscurity in short order.

My wife picked up a "Johnny Bagpipes" DVD at the Highland game a few weeks back.
Apparently he played the Grandtsand show at this years stampede as well.

I find his old stand-up routine really funny. My friend brought a CD on a snowboard trip to listen to in the car and we were howling at some of his skits. The guy getting hit by a car was hilarious on the CD but when I saw it again like five years later on his HBO special it just wasn't as funny for some reason. His newer stuff is kind of annoying and his movies really do lick bag.

That's the bit he stole from Louis CK. The guy on the bike right?

Great comparison.
Actually I hate both, but I think Nickelback are better at what they do than Dane Cook is at what he does. He is one of the most unfunny people I've ever seen...and he's a comedian. It just doesn't add up. Paris Hilton has done more to deserve being a celebrity than Dane Cook has.

Not on a bike. Just a guy walking down the street listening to his iPod and gets hit by a car. Maybe it's the same premise though but I've never heard of this Louis CK guy.

Ya its the same one, Louis CK's version just has him on a bike. I hadn't heard of Louis CK either until I got Sirius a little over a year ago, the guy's a golden god. The controversy got quite a bit of play on the airwaves, as Cook reportedly took in Louis' show beforehand where CK told this joke, and then all of a sudden Cook had a slightly tweaked version.
EDIT: Actually I may as well link it. I believe this was posted on here before, after this broke last year or whenever it was. God bless Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz3_ZYYE9II

I thought the bit he stole was about naming his kids random sounds?
nm, it's in there. This is a legitimate reason to hate him I suppose.
