I think the key thing most people are missing is that these same tigers almost assuredly get taunted by kids on a daily basis.

The zoo is simply ridiculously lucky that the tiger snapped on some drunken knuckleheads and not a group of kids doing what kids do at the zoo.

Lets look past the obvious legal implications here for a moment and call a spade a spade.

Taunting a predator is a bad call. Doing it while intoxicated and climbing on the fence, the only thing between you and said predator, is called "Assisted Suicide."

Not that I'm advocating that they deserved to die, its just the most likely outcome of that scenario.

I am saying that they dont deserve a dime of compensation. Contributory Negligence regarding their own safety should be considered.

And I've certainly been drunk in public -- I'm drunk right now on the C-Train -- but I've never taunted a zoo animal. I hope that half of us haven't done that. What kind of jackass does such a thing?
As mentioned, most of the jackasses who do so are kids. Kids taunting gorillas happens everyday.

Point is, even if these guys are jackasses, the zoo enclosure should be safe enough to compensate for the fact a jackass may taunt an animal.

Getting killed because of someone elses error (the zoo) and being a jackass seems like a raw deal to me. But I guess that's just me.

I think they will and should get compensated.
The zoo owes a duty of care, and having a fence 4 feet shorter then the recommended minimum clearly does not meet that duty. The zoo owes a duty of care to both jackasses and smart people.

Well, in general the kids aren't up on top of the fence where the tiger feels it can get at them - and apparently was right.

Personally, I think it takes a pretty small person to taunt an animal trapped in a cage, so I have about zero sympathy for these morons. Circumventing the security provisions put in place to protect you should mean you take full responsibility on yourself for any consequences of your actions.

Morons.

On a different side from stories around here, the cops were gutted to have to have to shoot this animal and scared beyond belief having to track it down in the dark, tramping through bushes.

Not true, The big cat family is noted for turning on it's owner let alone strangers, these cats simply cannot be fully domesticated.

Just last week i saw a show where a 14 year old girl was killed by here 5 year old "pet" Tiger. and he didn't kill her for food as he grabbed her by the neck but it snapped like a twig under the powerful jaws...

It's even a possibility that the Cats just don't know their own strength against humans.

People should also educate themselves on how dangerous these beasts can be, for instance a 600lb Amur Tiger killed a 1600lb Grizzly Bear in 30 seconds a few years ago at a hong-kong zoo.

Imagine what this beast could do!

It's amazing how far removed we are from survival instincts. Do you think our ancestors 10,000 years ago would go taunting a sabretooth tiger?

These guys are at about the same level of Neanderthals.

Reminds me of that SNL "Polar Bear" sketch
"I know, I can't believe it was - how easy it was to get into the zoo. We just hopped the fence."
"Hey, look at this polar bear cage. Hey, you think I can swim the little moat both ways before the bear eats me?"

Was it caught on video? I'd love to see that.

Sort of, it was on CNN. they didn't show the actual killing but it was filmed by an amateur at the Zoo but CNN cut out the gore, i forget how it transpired but somehow the Tiger got into the Bear area, they showed the Bear roaring at the Tiger, then they blacked it out except the sound.

Put it this way the Roar of the Tiger was stronger than the grizzlys, when the picture came back it showed the Tiger walking away from the lifeless bear (already with a dart in his back). they said the Tiger absolutely tore the throat right out of the Bear and it wasn't much of a fight.

They did point out that this Grizzly Bear was not a wild bear and a wild one probably would have not been aggressive with a cat but because the Bear was in his home (the only home he knew) he acted aggressive.

A wild bear will useally run from a 140lb Mountain lion let alone a 600lb Tiger.

Point is, the big cat family are the most dangerous creatures on the planet and should not be trusted as they are natural born hunters and killers.
