Oh wow Diplomacy. I actually forgot about that game. I played that back in high school. Our math teacher introduced that game to us. It was always one move per day near the end of class on a piece of scrap paper.
And yeah Settlers + City of Knights is almost a requirement. I don't mind the occasional Settlers game with no expansion though. You know, to break in the n00bs

Jenga is a great pub game. It requires no mental attention for most of the time you're playing it, but get's more interesting after people have had a couple of pints. Good way of determining who has to buy a round, down their drink, or any other wacky rule you want to tack on.

Diplomacy is great. If you ever have the chance and especially if you are interested in Italian history, try Machiavelli. It is a more complex version of Diplomacy, as if the makers of the original game just read The Prince, and re made their game. As you say it's tough to get 7 players to finish, we have played Machiavelli via email one move a week. It worked okay, need a neutral person to handle details. The conniving and backstabbing reached epic proportions when you have a week to scheme.

Why play any other board strategy game than Chess. Every other game after that is just a ripoff-like new music is to judas priest. Computer strategy games are way better, since you dont have to talk to those boring real people.

I've only read a very little about Machiavelli, but from what I've read it seems as though there's an element of luck added to the game. If true, this takes away from the true beauty of the game.
I play a lot of email diplomacy through the DPjudge. You can use this to create private games as well, thus eliminating the need for someone to handle the details of the game. It's all computer adjudicated.

The Farm Game. Love it.
Also, I still own Fireball Island. It's still awesome.

I guess there is luck when you use optional rules that distribute plague and famine. We didn't use them for that reason, though more late medieval soldiers were killed that way than by enemy action. The other dice roll comes into play when seeing if assassination is successful. Rare occureance in any game we've played. If you tried it I don't think you'd find it strays too far from Diplomacy's model.

I've come to hate games like monopoly. Boring. Instead I've turned to settlers and other german imports.
Also supremacy. Dont think they make this anymore, but its great if you can find it. Theres also the added intrigue of a player getting nukes in only their second turn.

Stratego is a great game that hasn't been mentioned, but my all time favorite is Risk. I mean really, who doesn't want to rule the world?

I imagine this has already been said in this thread multiple times, but I will say it again. Risk is the greatest board game of all time!

I think it would be just fantastic if there was an online version of that as well. I love that game, only get to play it when we go visit my family.

Long time since I've played that, but it was definitely a good game. Sorry is also actually a really good game, if you play with each person having a hand of cards to use rather than just drawing randomly from the deck. It can become quite vindictive.
I miss having friends whom I share a common culture with to enjoy games like that with.
