Wow I guess quoting me you missed the part where I said I doubted they paid more than a few hundred for using telus' infrastructure..
Regardless I agree the guy is a moron, I just find it insane that they can get away with charging that much.. Let alone charging it and not notifying the customer he has spend almost $100k in two months..

They can charge whatever they want, its up to the consumer to decide if they want to use the service or not. And I don't think there's any obligation to inform or stop a customer from using their service. This is all on this guys head.

Well, I know how Telus works, and generally when we see unbilled usage that high, we call. However, that requires us to actually see that particular user out of the 4 million customers we have... It's not a perfect system, but at least we try.

Heh...I agree, but if you look at many of the comments in the above linked Yahoo! story (and also a few in this thread), people are saying Bell should have had a system that alerted the customer that he was using way to much bandwidth.
Personal responsibility really is dead.

Oh no!!!!! My secret is out......
In other news, Locke has moved to Kuala Lompur to evade an amazingly crazy cell phone bill.
Little does he know, thats where the call center is and Bell has commanded their forces against him...
Will Locke prevail or is the end of CP as we know it?
The only way to tell is to tune in next week....same CP channel, same CP time.

I'm surprised he managed to get that much data down over a crappy cell-phone connection. I have a couple customers with 1x modems they use for remote sites without regular internet access, and you would be lucky to get ISDN speeds out of them.
He must have had the thing on 24X7, I can just see him at 3 AM "Dammit 12.4 megs left on goat_porn.avi I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN STAY UP ANY LONGER BUT I ALSO DON'T THINK I CAN WAIT 'TILL TOMORROW!"
(Then he posted a "moral dilemma" thread on CP 'cause he felt bad for the poor goat).

This situation has lead to two conclusions:
1. This guy is a total moron. Everyone knows Canada's wireless oligarchs gouge like there's no tomorrow... have a little personal responsibility.
2. These companies charge WAY too much... and maybe if they feel they can charge around $15/MB, they can do with some UNfriendly global competition.

I don't know why that guy would even agree to let the Sun post his picture. I mean, I'm sure most people already think you're a ######. Now they get to see what a real ###### looks like too.
And the funniest thing is his dad saying he's a lonely guy surfing the internet. Now everyone who recognizes the guy is gonna be like "hey, you're that guy that got that 85K bill for downloading all that porn through your cellphone!"

Only because Telus uses Bell towers in the East, its just a trade off by both companies to exand accross the country.

Yes they should, and I wouldn't be suprised if they do but possibly because it was a new account it was not caught or like Firefly said, you can't catch everything when dealing with millions of customers every month.
This guy is obvisiously an idiot and didn't read his contract terms or anything, like most people, they just sign the dotted line without even reading a word of what they were signing. You could probably slip in a contract to sell their house and they wouldn't even have a clue until you were moving in
Sell can't believe this made the front page of the Sun and some people are siding with him. Its like ordering the most expensive wine at a restrauant without looking at the menu and price and then being shocked when you get the bill.

If this guy is honestly smart enough to use his cellphone as a modem with his PC, he should be smart enough to read his contract and his bill or even goto bell's website and read the basic info on this.

As much as I think the individual is at fault here. He does make a good point. If they cut off his phone for going $100 over one month (how does that actually happen?) then why woudn't they do the same or at least contact him when the bill skyrocketed to $65,000 in one month? If this is true. The company must have wanted to make an example of him.

^^ Yes, but I think they have covered the whole "should have cut him off sooner" by lowering the bill as much as they did.
As for him being on the paper; he probably thought when they took his picture that he would be known as the crusader for all the injustices that big business puts on us little guys; as opposed to being a dummy.

Almost everyone I have talked to about this story puts the blame fully on the guy who racked up the charges and he should just pay the $5,000 and be done with it. If I was Bell and he takes them to court I would take back the offer of $5,000 and let a judge decide. My bet would be the judge saying pay up more than $5,000.
