Cruel Elephant? I think you are thinking of the Vicious Giraffe, which is just up the road.
It was called the "White Elephant". Back in those days it wasn't really even a bar. Someone lived in there and had the occasional rock show (THE HIGH ROLLERS! BENT ON BARBIE!), charged admission and you brought your own booze.

The Cruel Elephant was in Gas Town ( Near the Woolworth Building) in Vancouver where I saw Calgary Surf Rock Legends Huevos Rancheros.

Rebar was sweet. Most bars suck now! But I think he's thinking of the Night Gallery.

The night gallery was awesome on fridays. Beer and a hot dog for like two bucks. The embassy (previously the old, old republik... then the mint... now nothing) was another awesome friday destination. Buck bottled beer. You could drink cheaper there than at home.

Yeah, I liked the embassy too. Three different types of music, rooftop patio. Only problem was cabbing it to Acadia sucked balls. Crack Alley was (and I guess, still is) the place to go when funds were short. Man, the must be the oldest bar in Calgary. I haven't been there in 4 years... Next time I pass it I'm going in for a shot.

Same with me, haven't been there in three years and then went in during the summer for a buddy's birthday and I felt old as hell. The funny part is that the set of songs they were playing were pretty much the same ones (with a few new ones thrown in) they used to play when I first started going there. Looks pretty much the same inside, DJ booth with the stairway to hell leading up to it, five different bars to get drinks from, stage at the back. Only part that really changed was where the bar by the back exit was has moved and they put in a bunch of seats and a deck type thing.

That would be awesome. The name alone would ensure that no one except CalPuckers would ever go there.

Here's an old FFWD article regarding the closing of the old Republik.
http://www.ffwdweekly.com/Issues/2000/0413/cover.htm
Choy has retained the rights to the name and plans to some day open Republik in another location. Until then, he’ll start working on the club’s farewell celebrations (April 27 to 29) and concentrate on other projects – including a renovation of the old Razzbarry’s location in Kensington – all the while hoping one day there’ll be a place again in Calgary’s nightlife for a Republik.

Forbidden Dimension and Ramblin' Ambassadors are playing at the Republik on Thursday night (Huevos Rancheros was originally on the bill but are now off).
It's in the old "Detour" place.
Stupid facebook tells me this. It's "invite only", but I'll bet if you turn up there you won't be turned away.

At one point it was the Laugh Factory and then I think just the Factory. I can't remember what it was called when it moved across the street (on corner from drum and monkey) but I'm amazed I could even remember these names.

Went to the new Rebublik (not the Star Wars one) last night and had a great time. It's definitely cool.
I was extremely excited to see Walter the DJ in the booth. This is the same Walter who used to DJ at the OLD Den and then the Embassy. I think I was the only one there who recognised him which is a bit sad. Anyway, I chatted to him a bit, he says he is 'semi-retired', not doing any regular gigs, but may be invited back at the Republik to spin again. Anyway it was awesome, he was playing all the old favourites like Joy Division, Blur, Weezer, etc.
Just a heads up.
