Was just thinking....what would the voter turnout would've been if they managed to put the CBA vote on a plebiscite..just as an opinion vote?

I read somewhere the Alberta Liberal Party will never go anywhere until it changes it's name because it will always be associated with the federal Liberals. This is true, I think.
I believe the perceived association with the Federal grits is a factor but the Alberta liberals have a lot of other issues they need to tackle before they can take a serious run at the party.

Their #1 weakness in my view is a lack of a strong leader. Laurence Decore (sp?) was the last effective Liberal leader I remember in this province. He was guy that got people behind him. Its nothing against Kevin Taft - I think he's a very bright fellow - but he simply isn't the type of guy that will inspire people to toss out their existing government in favor of a new one.

Moreover, the Liberals have to come up with a platform that the people of Alberta will buy into. I agreed with some of their platforms but I am scared to death about going back into a deficit. I look at the expenditures and a lack of clear plan regarding where the money is going to come from and it scares me - right into voting PC.

That being said, if the Libs can come up with a strong leader, and solid plan for next election they have an opportunity. The PC party has been all about Ralph for too long - I'm not sure if they know how to rebrand the party with another face/leader.

I voted Alliance (though I am a PC supporter) because I would like to see them in 2nd place for the popular vote.## I believe the Alliance is the only possible strong opposition in this province.

I did the same thing Fire. The Liberals are dreaming if they think they'll ever do anything substantial here. I'd like to see an upstart grass-roots kind of part like the Alliance make some headway.
Here is something that I sent to the CBC. Part of it (bolded) got read on the telecast as one of their e-mail readings.

When will Albertans learn that starting (and voting for) ANOTHER right wing party will only cause grief in the long run. Federally, it has caused the right wing voters to loose an effective role in Ottawa by helping the Liberals to easily jog to a win several elections in a row.

This splitting of the right now rears its ugly head in Alberta. Votes going to the Alliance party have directly helped Liberal candidates win seats they should not have won had the Alliance not participated.

Four effective parties are too much. Left, middle, right. Take your pick. Two rights definitely make a wrong.....in elections.

Splitting the right cost the seat in my riding. I now have a Liberal representing me. Had the Alliance (right, right wing) vote gone PC, I would have a PC representative.

Careful how you view your "secondary" support status. Sometimes it gets that second spot into number one.... [/b][/quote]
Shawnski, The Liberals have had that problem. I helped out on a Campaign both in the Federal and Provincial election. Liberals have always split the vote with the NDP'er or Green Party or Soc Cred party. Thats the nature of elections.

The Federal Election: Had all the votes on the left gone to the Liberals rather than being split up amongst Green and NDP we would have won.

Provincial: McCall area, the same sort of thing is happening.

So it goes both ways

True enough Shawn. But, from what I could gather, the PC's had my riding wrapped up and I wasn't too concerned about the outcome. I'd like to see the AAP have a stronger voice (minues the religious stuff) in the Leg. It's about that time that the leading party gets upset and I sure as hell dont want it to be the Libs.

Please! 47% of the popular vote yields 75% of the seats? I'm willing to bet there were a lot more seats go PC due to Liberal/NDP/Green splits than seats go Liberal due to PC/Alliance splits. Why don't we just go to a one party system so everyone can have the PC representation they so clearly deserve.

Give me proportional rep - my Green vote would mean something and a majority government would mean majority.

And what in their platform makes you say this? I think most people would tend to disagree....considering that would put them in NDP territory...
