I agree that something just doesnt seem quite right to me about this, I would not be shocked at all to believe this was staged. How could a guy with THAT much talent not have been discovered at all?

And who cares if there are people who are better at opera than he is. That's like saying John Mayer shouldn't be famous, because there are better guitarists in the world than him.

Paul Potts caught a break. And I say better a man like him, who is seemingly humble and unassuming, and will help further the arts than say a Paris Hilton who caught a break by being rich and having sex on home video.
###. I also viewed this as Potts catching a break. Simon Cowell believed in him when maybe others didn't and offered him a recod deal. Sometimes it's being in the right place at the right time.

I think some people are being pretty harsh on the guy.

We have to consider context here. The guy is on a cheezy reality show, and in that context, that was mind blowing. Not because it was the finest piece of opera ever sung, but because he was so much more talented than virtually everyone else he was competing against. He wasn't in an opera singing contest with Pavorati or Bocelli, he was in a talent show where people play the guitars with forks or balance a butter knife on the nose while juggling.

Comparing him to Pavorati is like going to the mom and pop restaurant down the street, having a tasty steak for $9.99 and then complaining it doesn't compare to the standard of the filet mignon at La Riveria.

Wow. Before watching this video, I used to hate opera. After watching the video, I can safely say that I still hate it as much as ever.

I don't think anyone is bashing Potts. It just seems staged to me - the guy is a ringer.

Comparing Potts to Bocelli or Pavaroti is rediculous.

Saying you get chills from listening to him, or that he's amazing, or that he's the real deal is ridiculous. That is, after all, what prompted us critics.

Agreed Dion. I don't know how one person can tell you how to feel when you see/hear something. I, like teh_bandwagoner there, play the organ as well (I take it he meant the pipe organ). While I have had training, I am not what I would consider a professional. I think if I went on such a show to show that talent (which I think I can say I have, but not to an elite level) and people started absolutely trashing me, I wouldn't be happy about that. I'm not a widely known organist. Hell, unless you go to the one church I play at every weekend, you wouldn't know who I am either, but I'm willing to bet I can surprise Cowell, that woman, and that loser who can't spell his first name/tabloid writer on that show, if I were put into that situation.

Hahaha no kidding. Relax V. Wow your ear for oprah is so much more refined than ours, congratulations. No one's proclaiming him to be the best oprah singer in the world.

Bunch of Debbie downers on this thread.

Thanks Dion for sharing that link. I must have been living under a rock as it was new to me. That was really enjoyable to watch and, yes, shoot me I did get a few chills from watching it. The reaction from the crowd and judges was priceless. It didn't seem staged to me.

I played electric organ competitively for 8 years. Not quite as complex as a pipe organ. Two levels of keyboard, and one octave of pedals. Basically a glorified keyboard lol. Nonetheless, organ players unite!

P.S. I really really hope you're not exaggerating. Guitar with forks and butter knife on the nose while juggling? Brilliance! :P

Yes, I'm exaggerating, but only slightly... they have some weird, weird people on those shows.

I created the thread to expose posters to a different kind of music. The fact it was Paul Potts singing got most people to take notice.

What I didn't expect is to see is Potts getting trashed in this thread.
Would you care to explain what this new and different genre of music is? Or did you perhaps mean to say that you created this thread to expose posters to someone who is trying to cash in on the name of the person(s) who have made the songs he sings famous?

Well, I've played both piano and organ competitively as well. I'll tell you, though, I'd laugh if people told me that I was amazing, or the real deal, or that they got chills from my playing. And I would probably be the first one to tell them that they're completely wrong, they've just had close to zero exposure to the music I was playing, obviously.

Oh, and if you've played competitively, and you call what I've been writing "absolutely trashing", you obviously need to grow a thicker skin. Competitions aren't for the weak.

When did this thread turn into "American Pie presents Band Camp"?
