Poor little girl
Not that it really matters in comparison, but it has been a very long time since I've seen a traffic nightmare like that. At 2:30 Crowchild was still closed, and I saw the truck and bus getting towed down Memorial. The bus was tarped, but did not look pretty. The truck had some minor crumpling/scratching on the fender, but really looked fine overall. Memorial was backed up ridiculously from 14th street, especially for 2:30. Luckily no one else seemed to think of taking 10th street... hehe.

There was another bus accident after this around 1:00 on 16th Ave just before Sarcee at the totem there. The school bus hit someone in front and then got rear-ended by a commuter bus! There were kids in the back of the school bus, smiling no less, and seemed alright.
I was taking the long detour onto sarcee from 16th to avoid the crowchild mess, which i saw earlier heading northbound (yikes!) and was listening to 660 news when they announced that this other bus accident had occurred about 3 minutes ahead of me. Thankfully it was ok, more of a regular fender bender that is more damage to vehicles than people

I was reading various news stories, and a Toronto news site mentioned this crash, then mentioned two accidents involving buses in Toronto in the last week, then went on to note that this week is Bus Safety Week in Toronto. Nice little irony there.

A lady from my office and her husband are figured prominently in all those videos from the scene. I haven't been able to figure out if one of their children were on board or if they just happened to be one of the passersby (here's hoping for the latter). They haven't been in to work at all though...

Who does it sound like will be at fault in this? Was the gravel truck in the wrong where he was sitting?

It was stated that the gravel truck was properly in the shoulder. I certainly don't want to condemn the bus driver, but it sounds like she was at fault. As someone mentioned earlier, it could be because she was cut off or just driving defensively, but whatever teh case, the gravel truck was properly off the road.

That's some pretty inexperienced driving, drifting out of your lane when there is a huge truck parked up ahead. You absolutely have to stay aware of what's happening in front of you and around you. Even if someone is moving into your lane and forcing you right, you have to have an exit and stay sharp. Huge responsibility driving kids around.

Pretty much.
ESPECIALLY if you're driving kids around. By yourself, well you only have yourself to kill. With a school bus you're supposed to be looking after the future of this country.

If they're charging her, I imagine it was more than someone cutting her off. There must have been some negligence on the part of the driver, and there must be witnesses or she flat-out admitted it.

Police say it could be months before any charges are laid.

Considering the shortage of drivers school bus companies have to deal with on an on going basis, It would surprise me to see inexperienced bus drivers on the roads today.

Yesterday at church I found out the little girl that died used to go to our church a few months ago. Very nice family and they were sweet little girls. The little girl in the hospital was the deceased younger sister.
Her mom has had such a tough life and now to have to go through such a horrifying thing like this is just terrible.
I can't imagine having to tell the little girl that she can't play with her big sister any more.

Seems like the driver might be in a bit of trouble. If this is true, I feel even worse for the kids on that bus.

Police haven't determined what caused the crash, but will consider a statement from a Calgary man who came forward and said he saw the same bus making aggressive lane changes and tailgating the day before it collided with a parked dump truck.

The motorist who called the police said he was driving in the city's northwest last Wednesday afternoon when a school bus began tailgating him.
"The bus was weaving in and out, sometimes signalling, sometimes not signalling," said the man, who spoke to the Herald on condition of anonymity.
The man said he copied the vehicle's licence plate number and saw Third Academy's name and phone number on its side while stopped at red lights on Beddington Trail and Berkshire Boulevard N.W.
The motorist said he called Third Academy twice that day to report what he saw -- leaving a message on the first occasion and speaking with a receptionist the second time.
The man said he called the school a third time Thursday morning, before he found out about the crash, and spoke with the same receptionist. "She even remembered my name," he said.
When he learned of the collision involving a Third Academy bus later that day, he called police. "I still am unnerved that nobody from the Third Academy ever got back to me," he said.

How'd ya like to be that guy. He probably went home and told his wife something along the lines of "that driver is gonna kill someone driving like that".

If you have any children in your life, go do something nice for em. Tell em you love em. Give them a hug. Take them to a hockey game.
Life is so short, and so fragile.

Amen to that! For that matter, do this for anyone that you love.
