That's a really poor comparison. A $25 haircut and a $50,000 business fee aren't exactly in the same ballpark.

Besides, tipping for big business deals is not unheard of. They're called "bonuses" and business firms -- especially lawyers -- get them all the time.

Tipping the barber is mandatory. Only because it costs $17 for a cut. Taking that three bucks is downright mean if they guy did what you asked him to do.

But while we're bi*ching about tipping, I'd like to chime in... I was at Earls a couple weeks ago, and I tipped $18 on a $72 tab. Easy, right? $90.

So I was pretty distracted while making this calculation, but my objective was to tip well, and have a round number on the bill (it was more like $71.37, and I wanted to give an even 90 bucks.. had to do a little math). I thought for a few seconds (which is brutally long when using debit) and then I made a comment about how I can "still do math".
The chick stared at me and walked away.
As though suddenly $18 was not a good tip anymore because I spent a minute deciding how to keep the numbers round.

I always try to tip well on a haircut, the biggest issue I have is that my haircuts are not $20, so a 20% tip is way more than a couple bucks. Depending on what gets done, I usually tip between $10 and $20. A haircut for me usually takes an hour so I figure an extra $10/hour is pretty decent, and if I get colour as well, it's usually two hours, so that's why I tip $20 (or more). My hairdresser knows that I can't really afford a large tip when I can't even get my hair cut more than once every six months so she's pretty cool about it.

I don't mind tipping servers or barbers, but what really pisses me off is that when I guess a beer tub chick at a night club a $10 bill for a $6.50 beer, she only gives me three bucks back. Than she expects another loonie or toonie on top of that. So thats a tip of over 20% for her to just twist off a bottle cap for me. That only takes her a split second to do

Oh ya another reason I don't go to clubs much anymore. I once had a girl hand me back NOTHING from a ten for one bottle of kokannee!. The nerve, its just ridiculous. But, if someone deserves a tip, I'm pretty generous.

I think the best way to make a point if you got awful service is to tip 5 cents. That way they'll know you aren't just cheap and are trying to tell them something.

Bonuses are a way for a company to compensate someone for a job well done. Imagine that. A company deciding how much their employee is worth, not the client. The rest of the world should work similarily.

I only tip at restaurants and bars and I keep it to 10% (at the most) as 10% is easiest to figure out in my head.
you are cheap. and if you can't figure out 15% in your head add half of what you're going to tip to what you already have, it's really not that hard.

Now that GST is 6% i usually triple the tax so I tip 18% if the service is good, fifteen for average, and 10 for bad. It also depends on the "bad". If the server is really really rude, then i'll tip next to nothing, but if the service is "slow" because it's friday night at Joey's and the restaurant is a mad house but she keeps the pops refilled and checks to see if we need anything, i'll still tip 15%.

also, tip is supposed to be "pre tax".

I tip 6 dollars on a 39 dollar hair cut. it just works out easier to give 45 bucks, it has nothing to do with percentage. I figure since i'm paying 40 bucks for a haircut the girl gets a decent cut of that.
