If you use zip.ca they have a pretty deep selection.
On TV The Passionate Eye on CBC plays a lot of great docs - many of which were just in theatres. The documentary channel is also an option but I actually cancelled after finding they just replayed the same ones over and over again.
If you have Shaw VOD they have a really excellent doc selection available.
Video store wise Birddog Video and Casablance both have deep libraries.
I will also try to catch good ones in the theatres - saw Fog of War in theatres twice! (Nerd)

My favorite documentary is called "Tough Guys". Produced by the director of trailer park boys, it chronicles the life of several enforcers across the ECHL/UHL's of the world. Really captivating, especially for a hockey fan. I have only seen it twice. Once at the Halifax Film Festival, and it aired once on CTV I believe. If anyone knows where I could rent/buy this documentary it would be greatly appreciated.

A few more come to mind
Kurt and Courtney - on Cobain and by the same together there is a film on Biggie and Tupac that is very good - the name escapes me now of course.
There is also one called The Grizzly Project (I think) that is about a dude that builds a bad-ass suit so he can go fight a Grizzly Bear. Less about bears and more about a man's journey into obsession. Very good.

I really didn't like that one. The guy couldn't get anyone credible to talk to him about them. The only one not drunk or stoned during interviews is his Aunt Mary. 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Supersize me, I thought was a pretty good documentary. Especially with the knowledge of how over weight North America is. I'm hoping this helped some people drop the bad food habits, hoping...
Was not a fan of the Corporation. They seemed to be very 'Michael Moore'ish'
This is one of my favorites: Commanding Heights. 3 parts at 2-2:30hrs makes it a little long, but definitely worth it.

I just bought the 'Planet Earth' hd dvd for a friend...what was bad about it? I had only heard good things up until now.

Noone has mentioned Pumping Iron yet?
Although there has been some controversy about the storylines in this documentary.

Crumb which was the film about Robert Crumb's life as an artist and illustrator before he died. This guy was nuts and the documentary shows just how creepy he was. You can't look away.
On a side note, I'm hoping a filmmaker gets the bright idea to do a skeletons and all documentary on Stampede Wrestling and the Hart family. Stu, Helen, Bret, Bruce, Owen, Diana et al. Not to mention Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith, J.R. Foley, Archie the Stomper and so many more. There are some great characters from the early days until maybe 20 years ago.

I loved that one too... though I believe Crumb is still alive. All the interviews with his ex-girlfriends and his wife and such were particularly strange, especially given the way that women are depicted in his work.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436231/
and
Tarnation
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390538/
were 2 documentaries that I have seen fairly recently that I really liked.
Tarnations is pretty interesting because the director is actually making the documentary about himself. He has been recording a video journal since he was a kid. It comes off as slightly narcissistic, but is really well made and has some great artistic qualities.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston is about a somewhat legendary and disturbed indie/alternative folk hero who inspired many grunge and alternative bands.

Every time I see that tape in my living room I always wonder what ever happened to them later in life.
Glad to hear they're doing well.

I believe Gates is a minister with several kids.
Agee is still living off his 'fame' from the movie. His Dad ended up going back to drugs and was eventually murdered I believe, actually at Arthur's home. Agee is not following that path.
I read an article on them a while back. I'll try to find it and post the link here.
Ok...it was an Sports Illustrated's most recent "Where are they now?" issue. The article is no longer available at SI.com that I can see. It was within the last 6 mos or so...so if you can find one it's well worth the read.
