It also seems kind of odd to me that Israeli people would get mixed up in such an enterprise. You don't hear many (any?) stories of Israelis being taken advantage like this. Usually it is people from some poor place who need to make money and get duped into doing some crappy job like this.

I don't know how many porno movies are disappointing, but I assure there could have been a happy ending.
Anyways, it does sound rather odd about Israelis being taken advantage of but if you've ever been to West Edmonton Mall, the people running the kiosks are almost all Israelis. Most just come for the summer to make money. I don't know if they are promised more money than they can make in Israel or not though, but having been to Israel, it didn't seem like many were struggling to survive at all.
This door to door scam has been ongoing though:

In August 2004, two ringleaders of an Israeli “art student” door-to-door sales scam, Guy Grinberg and Yukov Senior, were deported from Canada for operating an art sales ring in Alberta. The “art student” ring operated in Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer. Eight others were rounded up with the art sales ringleaders. Three apparently escaped Canadian law enforcement arrest.[102] In neighboring Manitoba, twelve Israelis – six men and six women – were arrested in Winnipeg for selling the junk art.
