I've seen so many young kids who end up getting baptized or confirmed or whatever the dogmatic process is for your religion just because of their impressionable youth, peer pressure, conformity, parental pressure, etc.
I truely don't believe any person can make a true free will, volitional, and rational choice about this until they reach their 20s and escape some of the smothering culture of organized religion and their oft-stale social and intellectual circles.

Yep, my experience and attitude completely... I'm embarrased by all the sacraments I've accrued over the years now.

How do you back out of the faith? I haven't been to church probably since being confirmed in grade 6. Do I have to fax a letter saying something? Anyone have a number? I'm curious if I get a hard time, I actually look forward to getting a hard time (not not that type of "hard time", although I guess that wouldn't be a suprise).
Just watched that. Hilarious. "You get no presents because that's what Christmas is about". AHHAHAHAHA. He should have just said he believed. "Ok, presents, I believe....until the 26th".

Well certain Churches actually have a hilarilous bureaucracy of making somebody apostate...not sure about Catholics. I believe Bishops/Pope have authority over this... but Mormoms and Jehovah Witnesses have some certificates you sign. And then there are certain places that are off limits to you, all the people in the church are supposed to "shun" you until you come back. There are also large organized rules about how to conduct shunning depending on your relation and neccessary interaction with the person, etc. It's really quite ridiculous, the rules concocted by humans driven by fearful/aggressive instincts and ignorance. Any god so petty is not worth worshipping.

That's okay, they'll go into your heavenly bank account! Stay up late one night and check out Peter Popoff Ministries where he takes advantage of poor black folk selling them on a heavenly bank account and holy water sold via infommercial that will miraculously put money into your earthy bank account out of thin air...where in fact, the opposite will happen. He just takes every instance of the word "account" in some translation of the bible and tells folk it means a heavenly bank account in our modern sense. Then just like any infomercial, you get the vial of holy water for like $19.95, act now and you get 1 free! Sends magic money in your bank account, heals all diseases and afflictions! Blesses you with fortune in every way!

Oh yeah, literally all my friends at the time got baptized at like age 11 or 12. Around grade 7. It was "the thing" to do and I was just like: "man, I'd rather be the outcast, this is all peer pressure, are they really thinking at all for themselves or making an actual proper choice?"

You have described the God of http://www.sinfest.net/archive_page.php?comicID=2406 (I can't find all the strips relating to God right now, but they are hilarious. Search god in the search field).
The best damn(ed) webcomic ever.
