Nor do I claim to be an expert but, I think it is the case that we do realize that things we do are counter to our survival but we deal with competition and survival on a primary level and deal with compromise and sustainability on a secondary level. I wouldn't say that animals have a reason for every action, they act purely instinctive (primary operations - genetic) so if they are outside their element they have a huge problem adapting and die out. Humans have a reason for everything (secondary operations - cognitive ability). Of course it seems that acting by instinct, in combination with our brain, we do things detrimental despite our knowledge that it isn't sustainable and only affords us short-term profit.

Maybe I am just reiterating, and if so I have failed to get my point across howver rudimentary this post may be, I think it makes sense.

Big animal rights advocate here.

Vegetarian, with a mostly vegan diet.

So I don't represent a large cross section of the population.

Anyway, what we have done to our fisheries in Canada should make every Canadian ashamed. The grand banks had the most biomass of anywhere in the open ocean and now it is a virtual wasteland. All for subsidizing a wholly unsustainable fishery for the benefit of maritime votes.

The pacific salmon fishery is not far off.

It is a true tragedy.
