One bit of irony in all of this. The OP stated frustration that the police were not doing anything about the drug deals going on nearby. Then we get comments suggesting that the OP make the Crown prove the case in court.
However in pursuing this, it takes a police officer off the street to testify in court; when said police officer could be out fighting other crimes.

Well I don't think people are being "pretentious arses". Advice is being offered in my mind. When you look at the below....

Our ADVICE to him/her is to pay the ticket. I may be wrong, but it doesn't really appear that he/she has a legitimate reason. If I am wrong then fine. But...I don't think "I shouldn't get a ticket because someone else was doing a crime as well" should be a defense.
In all honesty, I don't think we were being pretentious. He asked for advice, and a range was given - from paying it/actually admitting what you did to show up and do this as it will likely reduce or eliminate your fine.
No offence Rhettzky, but I don't really get what you are getting at here.

It was actually quite simple to understand. If someone asks you what time it is and you say "time to get a watch" then you have in no way helped them. Just shown them what an arse you are.

Ok, I think we will agree to disagree. Going by what the poster provided, I don't think any of the responses were "time to get a new watch". Its almost like he was saying instead "well I have a watch on, but I just didn't look at it, that's why I'm late".

Buddy of mine did that. Pretty darn funny.

Ahahahaha
I used to live at 10th & 18th by SAIT. One night a buddy and I were walking to the LRT to go to the game. As we were crossing 16th, a cop noticed that my buddy had a beer (I JUST finished pounding mine, he elected to hold it against his body).
Cop pulls over and starts writing him a ticket. I run back to the house to grab a couple more beers. I get back just when the cop pulls away and we start crossing the campus and crack the new beers.
I finish mine just before that parking lot by the station and chuck the can in the garbage just as the same cop comes rolling around the corner into the lot. Pulls over again and writes my buddy another $115 ticket.
Oh I laughed. And laughed. And laughed.

Yeah, no kidding. You'r complaining that cops aren't arresting the drug dealers that were on the same block, (and what a great defense, by the way), so lets keep the same cop from doing his job for another half a day.
Unles you were born without a head you know that jaywalking is a ticketable offense.
Man-up and mail in the 57 bucks.

Last year when I was in cowtown I ran across the street infront of a cop car I never saw, they flashed their lights and yelled at me to stop. They told me I was jay walking and asked for my ID. So as I gave it to them I told them that the cops don't enforce that law in Saskatoon and I had never even heard of a ticket being issued for it. I said that I totally forgot about the law and since I had never seen it enforced I really wasn't sure I deserved a ticket. They both just laughed and cracked a few Saskatchewan jokes that I took in stride because this was saving me a ticket and then they just told me to make sure I use the cross walks from now on.
Nice guys, gave me a good impression of the cops in Calgary. 90% of the cops in S'toon would have given me a ticket for that for sure

WEll minus one or 2 responses.... . But I think the large majority have said basically to pay the ticket in a moreso respectful way. And although its a bit blunt, technically that poster is right. If you don't jaywalk, at all, you won't get that ticket. Ever.
However, I would imagine everyone in here has jaywalked at some point. But, if you get caught, and get a ticket for it.....well. I don't know about you, but I would pay it.
(* - disclaimer: this is of course impling that you are actually guilty, as it appears with this poster. If you weren't actually jaywalking, or if you don't have the financial resources, etc etc than I think you should protest it/fight it/go to court)

Ergo... we get to my original point.

Fighting this ticket seems like a lot of grief for a small amount of money. If there is no "it's the principle of the thing" aspect here, why not just pony up? If there were to be insurance implications or a blemish on your record then that's one thing, but it's not like you'll get 3 demerits on your Walker's License here.

Is contacting the prosecutor a myth or has anyone actually done it? I got a $287 ticket for not stoping at a stop sign in Lake Louise that was pretty much burried in the snow. Theres no way I can go to Canmore court to fight it and the IDIOTS over at POINTS said they would go for me for $600.

Speaking of fighting a ticket. I got in the mail a couple of weeks ago a letter from the city informing me that because I didn't pay my photo radar ticket on time that the fine has increased. The reason I would like to fight it is because I never got mailed the ticket in the first place. But I have a hard time thinking that the city will believe me. I might as well say that my dog ate my ticket. Do I have any options or am I SOL? As it stands right now my speeding violation is a phantom ticket as far as I am concerned.

I think that is a legit claim, it works for me with University parking tickets But those are only $40...
I think if you are willing to pay the full sum minus the additional charges they should let it slide. Otherwise just tell them they get no money because all you can afford is the original payment. Its worth a shot, better than just rolling over like an Oiler.

I was a student with a $390 noise violation fine. I had a B-day party in my condo for my roomate. I think the mosh pit pissed off the neighbours.
Anyway, I went to court and apologized. Just a simple "I'm sorry, I was throwing a birthday party, I am a student, it'll never happen again, and I already apologised to every neighbour that came over the next day to yell at me. Also, I am very sorry."
I paid $90, and walked out a free man. Always worth it to save a few bucks you don't have. I also pocketed the money my roomates and I had raised from the people at the party after the fine (about $100).
That was when I decided to go to law school.
