I think it's a $500 fine.

On topic it's a HUGE pet peeve of mine whenever I cross the street when I'm jogging. Marked crosswalks, some with lights, and people still "don't see you" when you cross them. It's apparently a HUGE frickin fine if you don't stop, but the 5 second delay you suffer if you did is apparently worth it.
It's kind of humorous to watch people try to "not see me" when I yell at their side windows as they almost take out my knees.

The city could make some SERIOUS cash if they hung out at the crosswalks around Talisman and the Elbow River. I'd guess it could make more than a multi nova or red light camera.

I don't know what it is, but that is a brutal area. How can these people not see the FLASHING LIGHTS but do manage to notice traffic lights? It's the same thing for crying out loud.

So it turns out one of the girls is a family friend of my girlfriend's. They haven't been able to get a hold of the girl's family yet, probably been waiting at the hospital.

With so much human traffic on 17th these days, especially in such a growing city. Why doens't the city just put a bloody pedestrian bridge along 17th???

All I've heard is one is in serious condition and one is in life-threatening condition.
Not sure if that's changed or not.

I got my license around a year ago. As of then, any corner or intersection is a legal crosswalk, marked or not.

concerning a T intersection. I'm not sure if everyone is fimilair with this spot this occured on, If the girls wanted to cross say from western HS to starbucks, that would be okay. But to cross across 17th there. that would be jwalking.

Thats a little excessive. Maybe a flashing pedestrian sign would do the trick...

Insurance companies assign 'blame' or 'fault'. If you ran a red light, you will receive and offense notice. The drunk driver will be charged accordingly.

they weren't Jay-walking. They crossed 17ave legally. The starbucks is located on the corner. Any intersection is a legal crosswalk.

The Traffic Safety Act, in particular, the Use of Highway Rules of the Road Regulation is quite clear on both the definition of an 'Intersection' and a 'Crosswalk'.
Both can be found here.

My face is a bum!

Its pretty scary how many people even just in this thread don't realize where legal pedestrian crossings are. It makes it less of a surprise that these girls were hit at this location. People need to know where they should be looking out for pedestrians.

Hopefully these girls pull through. It's no surprise that this happened there. That corner is a troubling spot. I was there last weekend and thinking about jay-walking, but went to the lights because it's so busy. I know I made the right choice now.

I think there's as much a lack of responsibility on the pedestrian side of things as well.
I wish there would be more emphasis on pedestrians than drivers, Driving a car is more difficult than walking is it not?
When I walk downtown or anywhere, I don't walk as if I always have the right of way why? Because accidents happen. I cross when it's 100% all clear to do so, not because cars should stop FOR me.
If there was more pedestrian responsibility, there would be a hell of alot less people getting hit by cars.

And learning how to walk again is harder than learning how to drive.
Frankly, that quote of yours is an attitude of somebody I would prefer not drive at all. I doubt you mean it, but it comes across as "it's hard driving a car, so look out".
Of course pedestrians should be responsible for themselves, but there is no way to be responsible enough to avoid people who don't know how to drive.

Agree with this gentleman 100%. After losing a gf a few months ago to a drunk driver, I couldn't have said it any better myself. Pedestrians obviously need to be somewhat responsible but drivers even more so.
