My mom got pet insurance for her dog, it cost her $30/ month, and now the dog is covered for up to 13500 life time. Well worth it in my opinon.

What an odd thread to go off track.

Get it back to the information that was being looked for - pet insurance.

Claeren in the future if you want to debate the value of pets- start your own thread.

Wow. Amazing.

#1 - I would like to thank those that posted in this thread and the two CP members who PMed me with information relating to PET INSURANCE. I read the PMs before the thread and when someone said the thread went all sideways I was puzzled as to how a thread about PET INSURANCE could be contentious.

#2 - I thought this thread was HILARIOUS!!! Mostly because I was ripped a new one just a month ago for saying that modern Christmas/Santa was about people wasting money on material goods when the resources would be better spent on helping those less fortunate. All of my family celebrate Christmas except me; instead I asked all family members to donate money to the food bank in my name (and for the second year running, my family has donated over $300).

#3 - I am an athiest vegetarian (almost vegan, but cheese is a necessary ingredient for a good pizza). I don't know what that has to do with the price of tea in China, but apparently that is important information for this conversation.

#4 - Julien and Mispa are my foster children in Cameroon via Canada Foster Parents Plan. I don't own an SUV, nor even a car; I prefer public transportation - less pollution and I save money. I don't have a cell phone either, but if Apple release an iPhone I may. What was the other thing? A house? No, I don't have one yet. Wish I did.

#5 - Is pet ownership a frivilous waste of money? Perhaps it is. But we all spend some money on things that we enjoy. I enjoy settling in to a good hockey game with a drink and a bag of chips and a cat nestled on the arm of the chair, purring away (though she does hate when the Devils or Flames score as the yell and fist pump scares her). If we frivilously waste ALL of our money and we have lots to spare for those less fortunate, then yes there is a problem.

#6 - I think from this thread and the aforementioned Christmas thread, maybe Claeren, myself and other non Christians may want to take one line from scripture to heart and let those who have not sinned throwed the first stone.

Christ, nice to see a normal and simple thread ruined by 16 friggin' paragraphs of weirdo rambling.

Anyways, I stash away a few bucks every month for my guys. I would have looked into insurance if there was anything available for my pets, but the companies I've heard of only cover cats and dogs. Sounds like a hassle when you actually need to file a claim, makes me feel better about simply putting away cash.

What you originally said and i took issue with in regards to religion is that pets and the sadness you would feel in their passing is equal to that you would feel for your immediate family members.
As I have mentioned before, as far as I am concerned, owning a pet, or any other object above the basic needs of necessity has nothing to do with religion whatsoever. I have never been speaking religion, you have. I have been speaking humanity. And I do not feel immoral for going through a deep grieving process when I lost my faithful companion of 12 years. She was a part of my family and I loved her. Do you have a problem with the act of love? Being able to love is good so why should grieving for a lost love automatically be bad if that object of your love was an animal and not a person?

Quote:
Are you a vegetarian? (Just curious)
No I am not and dont go trying to go out on a limb and say that if I eat meat, how can you possibly own a pet. I find no relationship between owning a pet and eating meat. By the way, I have children and and I dont eat people either!!! And I have houseplants and I dont eat them either. I find no correlation whatsoever in that kind of ideology.

But assuming it is just 'your pets' whose death would make you so sad, it seems you are obsessed with the personalized ownership aspect of pet ownership. That means that the sense of ownership over a living object and the loss of that control is as emotionally tramatizing as losing a loved family member. While this type of thinking seems pretty normal these days it seems to be pretty far removed from any sense of a moral compass. It is a perversion of humanity away from what i can see as Jesus' teaching. Lifestyle products like pets should never ever equal the value to you of living people.
I never said it was "just" my pets that I grieve for. I grieve for my family and friends as well, I grieve for all of humanity that is suffering. Just because I mourned the passing of my faithful "furry" friend, does not mean that I am incapable of compassion towards my fellow man and it does not make me immoral as you imply. Dont even try to preach to me that my morality is off the normal compass because I have pets, because I love my pets and because I mourn my pets on their passing. Who sets the compass - you?

Quote:
Would Jesus prefer you feel ownership over what essentially amounts to a consumer product over human life? Maybe, but i personally doubt it.
As I said, you brought Jesus into this whole thing, no one else. I see no way to bring Jesus into the argument of owning a pet than I do bringing in Buddah, Mohammed or Jehovah. I see the matter as totally different. My life in enhanced by pet ownership and I do not feel my morals are compromised by that fact.

Not sure about pet insurance . . . . . but my vet treated my wife and I to a limo ride into Calgary and a meal at a fancy restaurant with her staff just before Christmas, so I assume we're supporting the business quite well.

As to Claeren, which one of you bible-thumping clowns let the Godless commie into the revival meeting? (j/k).

See previous Calgarypuck debate on "The Moral Philosophy Of Favouring Pets Over Humans" at this link:

The comments from Farley Mowat are interesting in that thread:

Some random quotes:

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Ghandi,

"A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast."
--Proverbs 12:10

"There is not an animal on the earth, nor a flying creature on two wings, but they are people like unto you."
--The Koran (sacred scripture of Islam)

"I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being."
--Abraham Lincoln

"In studying the traits and dispositions of the so-called lower animals, and contrasting them with man's, I find the result humiliating to me."
--Mark Twain (author)

"For fidelity, devotion, love, many a two-legged animal (man) is below the dog and the horse. Happy would it be for thousands of people if they could stand at last before the Judgment Seat and say "I have loved as truly and I have lived as decently as my dog." And yet we call them "only animals"!"
--Henry Ward Beecher (abolitionist)

That was the worst, thoughtless, dumb, illogical post I've seen in a couple months. Good Job!!!
Or say an internet connection and time spent posting thousands of messages........

Get a grip. I have a dog (adopted from the pound). I have a cat (adopted from the pound mere hours before it was to be put to sleep) . I have a daughter. I also provide money for 5 underpriviledged children overseas.

The fact is, unless one is happy in their own life they will not spend the time and money making other people happy. If pets or other frivolous items bring that joy to someone so they can give more of themselves how the heck is that a bad thing?
