I always pull this story out at this time of year, but it's hillarious. Several years ago, a friend of mine got a box of screwdrivers from her grandmother. To top it off, after she opened it, her grandma said, "Oh, I got them for free!"

I usually got good gifts. Probably the worst one was a colour-by-numbers when I was 16 or so, from my uncle. Finger on the pulse, there.

A girl I was dating in high school gave me a huge box filled with newspaper--and then inside was an envelope with 2 tickets to Phantom of the Opera.

That has to be the worst gift ever. First of all--that's really not that funny. Secondly, I didn't even want to see Phantom--SHE did. I've always hated that Andrew Lloyd Webber crap.

One of my aunt's got me and my brother a Christmas baking cook book.

When I opened it I was so confused.

And what happened next - all I can think of is the episode of South Park where Butters has a tramautic accident due to the misuse of tap shoes. And the sort of sly, slightly disturbed (in a good way, of course) humour sort of fits right into Gimp's persona, doesn't it.

My Mom is the sweetest, nicest, most positive person out there, but she takes a special pride in finding 'bargains' which are usually such because they are random pieces of crap. This means that I have a selection of some of the most obscure (and worst) movies and CDs laying around. Also, last Christmas, she inexplicably bought me a massive, and surprisingly heavy, Friends Sitcom trivia game. Since I don't watch a lot of TV, especially sitcoms, it will probably never be opened unless the sun explodes and I'm forced to use the paper inside to start a fire. I was actually more shocked by how random the gift was than by how bad/thoughtless it was. I would have sooner predicted a human head.

Oh yeah, I definitely took the time to give him the verbal equivalent of a swift kick to the junk. He was properly immasculated for his poor efforts.

I don't even really understand the mindset... I love spending money on my loved ones. I probably go overboard, but oh well.

On topic:

My grandmother has given me my worst Christmas gifts... mostly clothes that don't fit me and I do not like. I have NEVER, in my entire life, got something from her that I liked. Not once.

My bro-in-law and his wife gave the Mrs and I an egg timer and salt and pepper shakers. They were married in September of that year so we're quite positive they were wedding rejects.

I agree with the clothes comment, and especially the too small clothes comment. In fact just last year my sister got me a to small Old Navy shirt...I think it was even yellow or something hideous like that. The worst part about it is the return of gift. Having to fight through busy suburban malls and return the crappy thing and get a different shirt while half the city is doing the same thing. Just give me gift cards, I can find something in about February when nobody is shopping.
