Just dress warm that's all. You don't need to hibernate just because it's cold out there.

Just out of curiousity Shane, what is the coldest city that you've ever lived more than two years in?

Do you have that growth oppurtunity in a place like Winnepeg?

that's very true. when I left Winnipeg 7 years ago to return home to Calgary I complained to my neighbour that to purchase a very equivalent home in Calgary I was paying (at that time) almost exactly 2 times as much...and he replied that that was true, but in 35 years when both of us wanted to retire to Victoria (hypothetical) my house might be worth 4 times more than his...that does appear to be playing out, despite the mini-boom in Winnipeg real estate (although of course Calgary is riding an insane high right now)

anyways I do agree that Winnipeg is a v underrated city and could be a good option for the original poster. It's not that hard to avoid the crime there, IMO

Fredericton. It had both extremes. Very hot and humid in the summer and the winter would be very cold. Usually there would be a few straight weeks of -40+ windchills and lots of snow, you just had to dress for it. I bundled up and walked the 30 minutes to work. It was refreshing.

Remember that not only will it be -30 when you try to walk places in the winter, you'll also be walking in the dark no matter what time of day you do it.

Whare are your two degrees in? Depending on what they are (and what your career is), going to a small town may be a complete waste of them, and you may never be able to find that equitable compromise.

Hopefully you're in Forestry Management...

Science and Business. My fiance always sees jobs in Y-knife in her field and the salary is double what she's making here. I see jobs up there similar to what I do here and I'd be looking at a $15,000/year increase if I was to get one of them.

Wanted to revive this, as I have to fly up there for a final interview/meet with a mining company next week so potential I move there is quite high if I don't get anything else here in the next little while as my contract runs up. The thought the EI is pretty crummy to me, never been on it, don't really want to start but the economy is crap for anyone in O&G.

Anyone been up there lately? All I am looking at is that the weather is -20c right now and I want to crawl into a hole because of the great winter weather we had here. I've worked in the oil sands before to get experience/pay school off during university so I am used to the cold, but what do you guys think a sizeable increase in your salary justifies the move? From different boards I am seeing people mention if you do not get higher than a 20K pay bump don't bother.

I have a friend who just transferred up there with his company at the beginning of the year. Seems to enjoy it so far.

Although he was sad when he saw a 12 pack of MGD sells for $40 haha.

One day when our civilization stops using attack drones to kill people and re-purposes them to deliver beer to remote locations the price will come down!

I live in Yellowknife. March and July are my two favorite months. If you can't enjoy the outdoors, don't bother coming. March is all about ski-dooing, ice fishing, cross country skiing, etc. July is about boating and staying up through the night because it doesn't get dark.

When you in town next week get out to the Snow king Castle.

1. How many Polar Bears have you killed?
2. How many people have you killed?
3. Why?

I visited a friend living there last summer and she loves it. It is a really young social city with a lot going on.

She hated her first winter because she stayed inside but then she got a dog that forced her outside year round which changed everything.

1) I've travelled extensively across the arctic and have yet to have a close encounter with a Polar Bear. A childhood friend/employee got mauled pretty bad from a barren land grizzly if that counts for anything.

2) I have also yet to hunt the most dangerous game. Typically I stick to shooting birds (ducks/grouse/ptarmigan).

3) No better way to spend the day than hunting with your dog.

I should also mention the biggest negative about Yellowknife is not the weather, its the social decay. That's only thing I really don't like about Yellowknife. All of the social problems of the north magnify in Yellowknife. A lot of people from the communities with addictions/mental health issues come to Yellowknife for legal (jail) or medical reasons and never leave. So you end up with a lot of intoxicated vagrants staggering around downtown getting into screaming matches and fights all the time.

The weather is great. Its one of the sunniest places in Canada. When its winter, its winter. And when its summer, its summer. It has none of that freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw hot mess that you get in southern Canada.
