Quitting at the moment, over here - I'm about three weeks in. I tried the gum a couple of years ago, with no success. I also tried quitting cold turkey too many times. Right now, though, I'm on the patch and it's going OK so far - huge difference vs. the gum for me. You'll still want a smoke, of course, but it definitely takes the edge off (and will help with your sanity)! That said, I was blown away at the difference it made on my first day quitting.
I have to admit, though, when out drinking (which I've also had to limit considerably), I find it impossible to not smoke, so I limit myself to one, or if I absolutely have to, two (I gave the last of my last pack to a friend to dole out on those occasions). It's not a very good system, but I think things are working out well so far. As soon as the pack is done, that's it for any smoking while drinking at all.
Ultimately, I think, everyone is different, so you'll have to experiment to find which method works well for you. I'm with ya, man. We can beat it.

One thing a few friends have done with the patch; keep buying step 1. When you are ready for step 2, cut it in half, and I can't recall if you cut it into 3 or 4 for step 3.

I sleep with the patch on - didn't realize that was why I was having weird dreams lately. Haha. It's true. Helps with the early morning cravings, though.
