He "clearly cleared his position" eventually. Is there a timeline for such things?

One thing that seems to get lost in all this is that the guy is a veteran himself. Does anyone really believe he was calling himself stupid? Of course not. But being the partisan hacks that they are, they glom onto this ridiculous little story and yak about it all week.

FOX still has a headline up about this. Getting a little less attention, of course, is the fact that 4 American soldiers were killed yesterday in Iraq. What are the priorities here?

It has nothing to do with my political views one way or the other. It has to do with common sense on what he meant. Given the tone of the speech and given the time of year (election in a few days), it was obvious that it was a barb directed at Bush and the Republican party. He muddled it and people deliberately midunderstood him/spun the sentence for GOP gain, while knowing all along what it was he meant.

Funny I noticed that as soon as someone made a big deal about what he said he clarified what the joke was supposed to be so even the people who seemingly can't rub two brain cells together and hadn't figured out the barb at Bush could do so. At the time he probably didn't even realise what he said could have been interpreted any other way given the context and content of the speech.

As per why are there no for few college grads in the Army? Umm well that has to the with the North American social structure, alot of minorities and those in families who arent in the middle/upper class dont have the opportunity to go to college without the assitance of the US Military.
I didn't say anything about that AND NEITHER DID KERRY (atleast knowkingly). He screwed up what he was supposed to say. He dropped out ONE word from a speech. It could have been any other word and no one notices but he missed the one word that would leave no doubt in anyones mind who he was talking about. He was making fun of George W. Bush grades a Yale...a C average at a university where you pretty much have to be dead to get less than an A-. They were comments about Bush not being smart, not studying and not learning anything in his education (as evidenced by his poor university grades).

And given Kerry's strong support of the military and own personal participation in the military you have to be an idiot to think he purposely suggested such a thing.

The military teaches disipline and respect for others. With the qualifications being equal, I would hire someone who had served in the Canadian military vs someone who had done kegstands at the local community college any day of the week.

Kerry is not an anti-war activist AND HE DIDN'T (knowingly) SLAG OFF THE MILITARY! HIS COMMENT WAS NOT DIRECTED AT THE MILITARY BUT AT GEORGE W. BUSH.

It was obvious to anyone and every one with half a brain (and no political agenda) no matter what political affiliation. The GOPs of course interpret it in the very worst way. And of course democratic house leader Dean interprets it the wrong way (he want sto make a run for the democrats you know).

Man, the backlash against the backlash against the backlash of this story is keeping this story going and going. I would think that the Democrats would want to shut up and let it die ASAP. It was a gaffe, but a VERY bad one.

And is it any worse than:

Since GWB has never made a mistake during a speech.
