Thought it was kind of strange the original poster didn't bring up the fact that the NFL is the most successful pro league in North America and it has a cap.
I dont think the NFL is a success because of the cap but most likely in spite of it. A non capped NFL would allow the NYG and LA (if they ever get a team) to likely consistently make the playoffs.

Also remember that a non cap is really only helpfull in getting free agents, most 32 years+ NFL players arent near as good as they are when they were say 28 - baseball is different, there isnt as much of a phyiscal aspect because its such an individual game.

32 healthy markets is better than 2-3 Mega Markets. The NFL is definately proving this to be true, meanwhile, baseball actually had to promise in their latest CBA that they wouldn't actually have contraction.

Eventually its going to get to a tipping point in MLB, fans aren't going to show up to various teams - Florida baseball in part with bad management and other factors (which includes a Salary cap), has been absolutely destroyed.

Tampa Bay has no hope of ever making the playoffs, so fans don't come out to the games. The ownerships knows this so they spend as little money as they can, because if they pump another 20-40 million, it isn't getting them anywhere.
