So your beef is him handling the animals? You say he teased them, how so?

There is a pretty big gap between dramaticizing whatever species he was showing millions of people who would never otherwise know anything about and causing distress to the animal.

A LIFE-long friend of Steve Irwin today told how the Crocodile Hunter pulled a deadly stingray barb from his own chest before losing consciousness and dying.


Friend John Stainton said he had viewed footage of his friend's last moments and the images were "shocking".

I have to admit, upon waking up to the news that the Croc Hunter himself, steve irwin died, i felt instantly sick to my stomach. Its weird, I have fond memories watching his show for the first time with my brother, and just LAUGHING for hours because he was so funny. We found it hilarious that a guy couldbe withing 2 feet of one of the most poisonous snakes and just be smiling or analyzing its feces hahaha. Most of all, he seemed like a really decent down to earth guy...although crazy, the type of guy that you could see your dad hanging out with while ATV'ing you know what I mean?

He will be sadly missed, its to bad, i was hoping someday to take my brother to the ZOO he owns, and we would meet him and tell him how much we enjoyed his show on discovery.

RIP Steve Irwin

PS. I feel so sorry for his daughter and son, and of course his co-host wife.

I haven't really heard anyone joking about his death. Most Australians are expressing the same kind of sad shock that North Americans are. The main thing Aussies really goofy about Steve Irwin was how he claimed John Howard to be the best leader in the world or something like that. Other than that some Australians maybe felt a bit of embarrassment towards his over-the-top crikeys and what have you, but most just kind of accepted him as just another kitschy representation of their culture.

The Crocodile Hunter was much more popular everywhere else than in Australia, as you might expect. Kind of like how Due South was much more popular everywhere else in the world than in Canada.

I just hope the video of his death never gets leaked to the Internet.

A couple years ago I went swimming with sting-rays in Central America. I used to always be afraid of the things but we had a guide take us out to a reef where we swam with them and actually petted them and 'tickled' them. These things were massive, like 5 feet across. They were quite tame.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I read today that the event was caught on film but due to the nature of it Discovery has said it "may" not air.

I read in the Sun that they turned the tapes over to local authorities and were pretty much going to leave what happens from there up to the family and authorities. If it was me or a family member I would wish for the tape to be burned.

If my wife or kid(s) died, and it was captured on tape, I may want to watch it once, just so I could have some sense of being there at the end of their life... just for some sort of closure, but after that I'd want the tapes destroyed.

Sad thing is, you can't trust anybody these days and how do we know a copy hasn't been made and will eventually leak out to the internet?

Just flipping through channels, I came across someone on Fox saying that Irwin has apparently said in the past that if he were to die on film, he would want the footage broadcast. Don't know if there's truth to that or how his family feels about that, or what network would be willing to show something like that.

There may not be a Canadian or American network willing to show it, but somewhere in the world, there are definitely networks that would be willing to show it. After one showing it would be all over the Internet. That is, of course, assuming the footage is distributed and not immediately burned.
