You need oil for nearly all of the industrial processes to create a car; Steel, Rubber.
Not to mention their is no way to really increase the production of ethanol without planting crops on arable land already used for crops. So what do you do? Remove 5% of the food production in the world and replace it with crops for ethanol?

OK, I would be interested to see how you figure there are a trillion cars on the road. That would mean every man, woman, and child each has 167.
The other thing is nobody is saying take good cars off the road. Just when building the 2008 model Honda, make them run on ethanol instead of gasoline.
And use waste crops for production of ethanol. We humans are pretty picky about our food- most of us go over our fruits and veggies before putting them into the cart. The ones destined for ethanol can be a lower grade; ones that can grow in a shorter period, or over the winter. I believe there's already a crop called winter wheat; planted in the fall and harvested in the spring.
