If you want to kill everything in your yard and seriously contaminate your soil, spraying toxic chemicals is the method to do it. True story:my neighbours decided that they would use toxic chemicals to kill weeds in the shared area of our lawn, they ended up killing everything on this piece of land. The funny thing is nothing will grow there now except weeds! The grass and shrubs are dead, but the weeds are thriving!
Yes, ground cover is wonderful. I have my stuff planted so that now, it all grows intermixed, no sunlite gets down to bare ground, I have no weeds to contend with. Ground cover does not have to be plants either, it can also be a mulch.

And yes, many chemicals are very toxic. Me suspects that your neighbor used a sterilant. Round Up is not a sterilant, like I said, I use it to edge around my gardens and beds every year, to keep the grass from creeping in. It does not kill the grass permanently, just where you dont want it. And I dont want grass growing in my flowers or vegetables.

I suggested round up to the person, since they did not want to plant grass this year and wanted an easy way to control the weeds. Planting ground cover, using mulch, is neither easy nor cheap. It is a wonderful alternative long term, I think the person wanted a short term easy solution.

Yup, I'll pick some stuff up tonight and start it tomorrow.

anyone have any idea on how to control quack grass without killing the lawn with round-up. Hand digging isn't an option as my yard is to big, and the quack grass problem is too great

TIA

In my experience, the best thing you can do once quack grass has gained a foothold, is move.
