They probably get brown envelopes every month from all the bars. Insane. But what can you excpect from a Mayor that bought his way to office.

I'm in Laroque's ward. Tough to be a stand up individual when you are missing a backbone.

Here was my response
Thanks so much for your support. Pls email your friends and colleagues and ask them to email Diane directly at dcolley@calgary.ca so that she can demonstrate public support on Monday as well as emailing their own Alderman, asking them to support the Notice of Motion. They can contact their Alderman through the City's website at www.calgary.ca. I'll pass your comments on to Diane for Monday's Council meeting.
Thanks again.

I sent my email to my Alderman. I would love to be able to go to a pub and not come out smelling of cigarette smoke. Perhaps a moved up ban on smoking might convince the Flames' Sports and Entertainment Centre to open its doors as a Smoke Free Business?

I just have a quick question about this:
I am a smoker, and while I have NO PROBLEM with the smoking ban, I wonder if Calgary will maintain the 'no smoking on the patios' bylaw if they do go ahead and ban it.
Out here in Victoria there is no smoking inside, but most bars have smoking patios and this works just fine. Would they keep the @$$-backwards patio smoking prohibition?

Here in Lethbridge a ban on smoking takes effect January 2007.
Here is the link to what the smoking ban covers:
No Smoking
You will need Adobe, or another pdf reader (like you don't already have one).

I'm in Lowe's ward and e-mailed him before I realized he was against the ban. I wish I was a little bit harsher with what I wrote.
Still no response.. has anyone heard back from Lowe?

both Sydney and Halifax are smoke-free cities here in Nova Scotia. I *LOVE* it, I'm a non-smoker, who'd have to shower twice the next morning, and continually run my clothes through the washing machine to get the smell of smoke out.
As soon as the by-laws passed I stopped hearing my parents say Saturday/Sunday morning "oh God you smell like an ashtray!"
The health thing as well, and smoke bothers me, I have no troubles now, and only worry about alcohol killing me

Please get cigarettes out of my life!
In Germany they sell cigarettes out of vending machines for 4 Euros, and people there don't think much about smoking. I think 4/5 people out there smoke including kids that are like 12 and 13. Smoking is like good morning over there.
Back home people are really up tight about the issue. Having said that, I am one of those guys and would like to see smoking banned.

And I don't expect one.
I see other aldermen on the news, explaining points of view, why they voted how they did, standing up for their constituents. Never Ms Laroque.
Is there any public record of aldermanic votes? I'm wondering what her voting record is, and if perhaps someone else on council advises her how they would like her to vote?

The reply I received.
Alderman Farrell asked me to thank you for expressing your support on the Motion. She will be voting in favour of the ban.

Just pretty invisible. Last election there was no incumbent, and there were a large number of people trying for the seat. Laroque got a couple key endorsements, and that put her over the top.
I just found the minutes from the last meeting, and it does appear that she doesn't vote 'with' anyone. A number of issues she was one of the few voting against. But I've gone back a few meetings and don't see anything initiated by her.
Interesting, there was another motion at the last council meeting:
Quote:
SMOKING ON OLYMPIC PLAZA (Alderman Burrows)
WHEREAS Council recognizes that environmental tobacco smoke (or second hand smoke) has adverse public health consequences and significantly detracts from the enjoyment of places open to the public;
AND WHEREAS Council has legislative authority respecting the health and welfare of its citizens and over people and activities in, on or near public places and places open to the public;
AND WHEREAS the Smoking Bylaw currently prohibits smoking in some outdoor public places such as outdoor patios of restaurants and bars;
AND WHEREAS the Smoking Bylaw prohibits smoking in indoor places where minors are allowed;
AND WHEREAS Olympic plaza is a public place where large groups of people of varying ages including minors, congregate to enjoy informal and organized activities;
AND WHEREAS Olympic plaza is a public place designated to the recognition of Olympic athletes, physical excellence, and healthy living;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Administration be instructed to draft an amendment to the Smoking Bylaw 57M92 to designate “Olympic Plaza” as a prohibited smoking place;
AND NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT Administration be directed to investigate the designation of all City Parks as prohibited smoking areas, and report back to the SPC on Community & Protective Services no later than December 6th, 2006.
