The Arden had some major quality control issues, so I'm not surprised they went under. I've had some horrid food there.
Big T's on 17th Ave SW is gone.
Julio's Burrio (sp?) is disgusting.
Red Robin left Calgary, the franchise is alive and well but they wanted to re-think their strategy here. When they changed their fries from double-cooked wedges to cheap McCain-esque steak fries I stopped going there.
Earl's constantly changes their menu. Their current menu is atrocious unfortunately. Michael Noble has ruined that place.

Re: Red Robin closing down.
Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that for a "premium" burger restaurant they used patties that were no better than what you could buy in the frozen food section of 7-11.

The Big T's across from McMahon Stadium is still open. It's in the stripmall on the other side of Crowchild by the C-Train ramp. I love that place!

I never figured it for "premium" (was that how they classed themselves? if so, brutal). I figured it was one step up from the fast food burger chains. There always seemd to be a few CPS there, so I figure they probably have tried a bunch of placesand stuck with RR. I liked their burgers, the fries were good (and free refills). So instead of $12 for 2 people at McWendyKings, it was $25 at Red Robin.

Long, long before I moved to Calgary (3 years ago) our family visited our cousins here in Calgary and we went to Shaky's pizza for supper. We were living in rural Saskatchewan at the time and I was just a kid, so it made quite an impression on me... I still have a vivid memory of watching them make the pizzas (I believe they had a window into the kitchen.) That would have been in the early '80s sometime.

Regarding Julio's Barrio... I think they're carving out a new niche... Mexi-Canadian food. I am just waiting for them to come out with a perogie burrito and poutine nachos. I ate something there that reminded me a lot of my Ukranian friend's mom's cooking. On the first day, she'd make a taco box kit with way too much meat, on the second day the leftover taco meat became spaghetti & meat sauce, on the third day the leftover spaghetti sauce became chilli. What I ate at Julio's reminded me a lot of the third day chilli.

I don't mind Julio's Barrio, but yeah. For more authentic stuff try "Tios", on 14th St., just a couple blocks South of 17th Ave.
I always wanted to try "The Sultan's Tent" on 17th Ave, and now they've closed up so they can build a Mall on those two blocks. Does anyone know if they are reopening somewhere?

Yep, there's a Big-T's there. Not a bad place, serves no frills stick to your ribs BBQ, reminds me of another once good-but-gone restaurant.
Anyone go to the "Red-Devil" in Eau-Claire?
When they first opened, they had this thing called the "Memphis platter", it was your choice of three kinds of meat with two side dishes. Cost about $14 bucks (that's in 1998 dollars though). Frick'n enormous. Should have called it the "Elvis (die on the toilet) platter".
Speaking of dieing on the toilet, they also had a wall of ultra hot sauces and tortilla chips you could try out and take to your table.
They opened three franchises in the city, then started messing with the menu and eventually closed up shop.
The Palimino downtown is also in the same vein as Big T's and Red Devil. I've had both really good and not so good meals there.

I HATED the Red Devil. My wife had a pasta there and it was just basically a congealed mess of cream sauce. Their meat was totally forgettable as well. The Eau Claire one especially prepared dished very sloppily.
Booker's is supposed to have awesome BBQ.

Anybody gone to East Side Mario's recently? Is it busy or are they on their way out?

I was there for lunch two weeks ago. There were plenty of empty tables. They used to have a great menu, but I'm not sure what happened. I like the complimentary bread, but the menu is seriously lacking.
The service is good though.
