I don't think a lot of these movies are underated. I mean Clerks, Office Space, these are almost mainstream now aren't they?
I guess in that vein I'll throw in The Life Aquatic.

...I'm sure most here would disagree for whatever reason, but they're all pretty solid rentals that are probably better on the TV rather than the big screen.

Tom Hanks movies usually do very well at the box office, so tough to call them under-rated. Especially The Green Mile (great movie by the way) but wasnt it nominated for best picture?

I thought Life Aquatic was incredibly overrated. Mind you, Wes Anderson fans are the homers of the movie world.

When I first saw the film, I immediately said to my wife that a lot of the mood and suspense felt a lot like 9/11, the way they were connected to this unbelievable thing through media along with most of the rest of the world. Later, I found out that this movie was actually filmed in the weeks immediately after 9/11, and the cast and crewed talked about using the movie as a way of channeling some of the doubt and apprehension that they were all feeling. For me, it succeeded enormously at that; every time I watch the film, I have a tremendously strong personal reaction to it.

Huh. Never thought of that. When I got to the end of that flick I raised my eyebrows and said "that's it, that's how they get 'em"? Too bad really. I thought it was a great movie all the way through and that scene with that birthday party in Argentina is one of the spookiest ones ever but I really felt shortchanged at the end.

Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures"...easily the best and most underrated film of the 90's...and when I see critics refer to the film as "better then LOTR"...you know its gotta be good!

How do people define under-rated?

There are a bunch of movies I wouldn't consider under-rated, but maybe I'm using a different definition?

I would think it would mean a movie that was supposed to be crap (usually by the general concensus I have heard), but when I actually saw it turned out to be good.

Movie which didn't get the pub you thought it deserved or maybe just got a bad rap or maybe the critics butchered it.

Unbreakable: Bad rap, not a lot of people thought it was any good.
