Thinking like that ****es me off to no end, it's so ****ing cliche it makes me sick. I hate it when people hate stuff because it's popular, that has never made any sense to me. Newsflash, you ever thought that some of the stuff you listen to isn't popular is because it's absolute crap, but since no has ever heard it, you think its great because "it's about the music".....ZZZZZ....what a load of crap.

I'm not gonna come here and say that popular music is solid gold, but some it is great, and yes, a lot more than 10 percent. Stuff on Muchmusic is generally pretty ****ty, but radio plays lots of good music.

Didn't mean to rip on you, and im sure you vehemently disagree with me and thats fine and im sure the majority of guys disagree with me and thats fine, but guys who say that a band like Nickelback sucks, thats not true, 12 million albums sold will tell you that they dont suck, you may not like the band and thats fine, but they don't suck. Yes, this is a quote from Chad K. but it makes perfect sense to me.

I'll go out on a limb and say The Rolling Stones. The absolute worst musicians on the planet and yet they are immensely popular.

I probably hate them so much because they steal some thunder from The Who.

I knew this thread was going to come to this...you just don't get it at all..its fine that you like nickelback, you can like whatever the heck you like. But mainstream music right now is more about selling a product to the consumer, thus all you here is generic watered down, unchallenging, uninteresting product. When you have 20 other bands that sound exactly like eachother dominating the airwaves, i'm sorry, but some people get sick of that. If you are happy with mainstream music outlets, go nuts, but in actual fact, it is the worst it has ever been, it is next to impossible to hear something new and interesting on radio or muchmusic. I personally have given up on mainstream outlets, and its not because I hate anything popular, its because a lot of what is "popular" right now is boring. Obviously though, according to you, popularity somehow equates to quality, so the boy bands and teen queens must be the best musicians on the bloody planet.

See, that's EXACTLY the problem. People today try to justify how good somebody is with how many albums they've sold. Are you freaking kidding me? Music is not a balance sheet. I'll be the last one to tell anyone what to listen to, but thinking that numbers equate to quality is just stupid.

You've clearly never listened to Simple Plan. Everytime I here that whiny voice start up I want to scream.

That's easy.

Nickelback.

They are everything that is wrong with music today.

Period.

There are very few bands that are 'good' and are still popular.
I have to disagree with that. Look at Green Day for one. The White Stripes are another example of music that has remained good while still enjoying popularity. Also the new RHCP album debuted at #1 so that's a good sign.

All of these bands have done this by maintaining some originality and not just going with the flow of mainstream music.

Taste has nothing to do with fact, I wasn't talking about taste. But people don't even have a chance to develop a specific taste, because they are very limited in what they are given access to by the big music industry machine. Things like Muchmusic and mainstream radio limit a person's musical experience, not extend it. That is a fact.

Harper seems to be a guy that could easily be marketed to the masses and sell tonnes. He is a good looking black guy who is mega-talented, uber-cool, married to a celebrity and his music isn't overly quirky or ahead of its time.
Yeah, I love Ben Harper's stuff. I don't really see how Green Day can be accused of 'selling out' since they've never really changed their style (ok, Minority sucked). The same can be said for RHCP, IMO. They've evolved but their music is still generally the same. That being said, I know some people look for any excuse they can to say a band sold out.

The Who, they are my favorite band but the majority of there songs would be so much better if they were sung by Pete Townshend instead of Roger Daltrey. So I guess you could say I don't like Roger Daltrey.

Nothing is worse than Simple Plan.

Nickleback is terrible. Most Rap/Hip-hop is terrible.

Pink Floyd is mediocre at best, and horribly over-rated.
