Pure races can be found. Specifically in African and Brazilian tribes that have had little or no contact with the outside world. Other than that I think it would be hard to find lineage without some kind of inter-racial genetic exchange. The fact remains however, we all began in the same place regardless if you believe in evolution or creationism.

I noticed that your post listed Asians as a "race card".

A while back a got an ear full because I refered to someone from China as Oriental.
My question is when did oriental become an inappropriate word?

Here is my reasoning in greater detail.

My first choice would have been to refer to the gentleman by his name. Since I did not know this my second option would have been his country of origin. Since I did not know his country of Origin it would have been arrogant and rude of me to refer to him as Chinese. If he was from HongKong, Taiwan, or Tibet it is definetly not the same thing. It's like when I travel to Europe and they refer to me as American and I correct them. The usual response is "same thing" No its not!

Now I realise that "Asian" is the prefered terminiology. But it is a horrible descriptor.
Nik Antropov from Kahzakstan is Asian. So is anyone from Afgahnistan, Japan, India, Siberia. I mean these people are all from Asia, the Largest Land mass on Earth yet have vastly different genotypic physical characteristics.

My point was that Oriental means "eastern" but is generally assumed to mean "the Far East" or "South Eastern Asia". Is that not a better descriptor than Asian?

Like I said I would prefer not to refer to someone as anything else other than their name or possible country of origin however real life situations sometime do not afford us the luxury.

I apoligize again if I insulted anyone with the oriental reference. I did not realise there were negative connotations associated with it. Are there???

I believe it became a bad word after Edward Said published Orientalism.

Oriental, in a nutshell, was a word used in the west to exoticise and de-humanize people from the east. The book is great, I recommend it.

The term "Race" is only about 200 years old and was oringnaly a term in regards to breeding horses, the term "Racism" didn't come about to post world war 2 after the Holocaust, just goes to show how much your "Race" really means

While we're on the subject...

Why is Tiger Woods black?

Why is Jarome Iginla black?

Why isn't Tiger Woods recognized as the best thai golfer ever? Why is he an inspiration to little black kids, but not thai kids? (I'm sure he is... but you'll never hear about it).

Why is Jarome Iginla the best black hockey player in the leauge? It seems to me he's a pretty good white player too.

EDIT: Tiger Woods is half Thai. D'oh!

I'm always confused why 3/4's anything else mixed with 1/4 black makes you black. Very odd..

Funny thing; until today I didn't know Tiger was anything but of African descent, and prior to 2004 I didn't know that Iginla was part black. One of the resons my earlier response was "human" was that I really don't see people as being of a certain nationallity unless it becomes important.
