I think the 1200$ is a good thing.Daycare is subsidised for low income parents but if you want to put your child in a dayhome there is no subsidy available. This way you can get help financialy no matter where you want to send your kids

For everybody who is whining about this, remember that by doing this Harper is saving you money. He is cancelling a 6 billion dollar program and putting in a 1.2 billion dollar program (and an even more effective one at that)

I wouldn't really suggest trying to put a logical argument forth with FOL about economics/taxation, dude is bat sh*t crazy.

His Anarcho-Capitalist system has been proven invalid numerous times, it can't deal with monopolies/cartels, insists you should pay for basic services (police protection), and tons of other irregularities which the system couldn't possibly support.

another angle to consider ...

under the LIberal plan, only corporate daycares could recieve a subsidy for childcare. in otherwords, if you are a low income earner and qualify for a subsidy, you could ONLY take your child to a daycare centre. for instance you could not choose a day home provider.

typically, a day home will have a very small ratio of caregiver to child, less than 4 kids for every 1 caregiver. it also provides a much less clinical enviroment for the child to spend their time in.

the point being, day home providers play an important role in child care, but parents with subsidy could not choose a day home. the only case where they could was if the dayhome was part of an agency network, and the agency sucked up to 1/4 of the pay from the dayhome.

as a parent, i want choice. choice to stay home, choice to goto a day home or a day care. $1200 is hardly much, but at least it doesnt exclude a good portion of the families.

Amen to that too.
The children and their families that benefit from the credits are providing goods and services to you and your fellow Canadians both now and in the future.

It's an investment in your economy and society.

Disclaimer - I dont have kids, haven been somewhat close to being married but never done it.

To look at it from a purely economic stand point, those who have kids are adding to the future tax bowl so giving a little incentive now will pay off in the long run.

Yes it is a way to "buy votes" but considering at least 60% of people in this country have kids or have had kids, I tend to think that someone who doesnt drive a car anywhere or takes the bus is in the minority and as such loses.

If/when I get this $1200, it will go directly into our vacation fund. I am much happier with this option then the liberal plan. Lets hope the May 2nd budget is passed.

FYI, my wife stays at home with our 1-year old.

I suspect the $1200 goes back into the household to replace the $1400 that my household paid for my son's preschool fees. And my wife is a stay at home mom too, gave up her job to raise the kid...
