I had the best sushi meal in Calgary at Hiro's. I was helping to translate for a bunch of out of town Japanese parliamentary types and Hiro's brought out the "real" deal for that meal - given the status of the folks present I image. Their average is average but their "tokyjo" - or expensive special sushi - is wicked.
The next best yummy reasonable place for sushi is Shiro's (at least I think that it's the name - been a couple of years now - it's in a strip mall on Cambie) in Vancouver. Ask for the Kazu roll (not on the menu) and a side of king salmon sashimi. My father-in-law, who was a sashimi chef for 40 years, BTW, praised Shiro's out of all the places we ate at in Vancouver when he visited Canada back in 2002.
