Simple would be stating the obvious when someone is asking for input. If someone was asking for a good place to buy tensor bandages after spraining their ankle going down a flight of stairs would your advice be "Maybe watch those stairs next time"? Brilliant.

I agree with Reggie.

Here is some more simple and powerful advice for y'all:

Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford (SNL)

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/05/05lbuy.phtml

CP: Did you know that millions of Americans live with debt they cannot control? That's why I developed this unique new program for managing your debt. It's called [presents book] "Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford."

Wife: Let me see that... [grabs book, reads] "If you don't have any money, you should not buy anything." Hmm, sounds interesting

Husband: Sounds confusing.

It's not against the law to sprain your ankle, although I do heartily endorse physical coordination whenever possible.

Ok. Be a man, admit to your fault, pay the price, learn from the experience, move on... and don't speed.

Pay for your own insurance. Then you woudn't have to worry about mommy and daddy finding out. I can see why my parents made me pay for my own insurance now.

Wow. Some of you guys are crotchety old codgers, eh?

Either I'm a bionic superhuman, or a good portion of the posted speed limits cater to the lowest common denominator (old poeple and asian ladies) (bring on the "you're a racist" retorts).

Are you guys THAT old? Or are you just looking for an easy way to be right?

I can think of a bunch of roads that have ridiculously low speed limits. It's not for safety, it's for cops to set up 'fishing holes'. Take a ride down the new portion of 24th st. Is it still 60 there? WTF? They build a brand new road, with great long distance view, and they slap a 60kph on there.

Don't speed. Great advice, Reggie. I've got an idea, how about re-testing old people every couple of years? How about shutting down the bogus driving schools that sell licenses to asians? And don't bother calling me a racist. My friend's mom "bought" her DL.

Speed limits in Calgary are a joke. Except in winter. Suddenly they are just right.

I'm in total agreement. New drivers should have to buy their own insurance. That way they may have more respect for the road and other drivers. Now I'm not attempting to paint all new drivers with the same brush. I have come across some young drivers that are waaaay better than some adults I know. Go out and buy a car you can afford to pay for and pay insurance on. Liability rates for new drivers are well within striking distance of anyone holding down a part time job.

I will agree with you there. I am of the firm belief that half of Calgary's driving population would get run over (or have a heart attack) and die on any European or UK road. Natural selection at its finest.

So you're saying that there is a reason why they have the speed limit set at the posted rate.

There are plenty of roads in Lethbridge that are set to be waaaay too low, IMO. However, if I don't want a speeding ticket then I shouldn't speed. If I do speed and get caught I'll just be a man, own up to my mistake, pay the ticket and move on.

True dat, but not just Europe or UK (although it's pretty nuts here in Italy).
Head to Toronto. Half of Calgary's driving population would **** a brick just doing a commute from Hamilton to TO. Wow. A trip down the 401 or the QEW (is that the same road, or do they just head in the same direction?) would put many a calgarian in a coffin.

Good for you. I'm sure you drive a pinto, or something that isn't capable of actually hauling ass. If not, why did you waste your money on something that will NEVER go over 110 kph?

Gee thanks for the insight 4X4. Exactly how long have you been designing roads so that you know exactly what speeds roads are safe at?

I like your example of the new portion of 24th street being too low. See I would have assumed that perhaps there were reasons why new roads might have lower than expected speed limits, maybe something to do with construction or traffic flow in new areas, but I guess I'm wrong. I sure am glad we've got someone like you who knows everything about roads and speed limits. Perhaps you could apply for a job with the city and teach all those engineers how to do their jobs properly. Oh and while you're at it, you can go up to edmonton and get them to change all the laws that madate what conditions mean a road has to have a certain speed limit? If you do this then perhaps the cops will finally lose their iron grip on the ability to arbitrarily set speed limits so they can catch speeders and write a whole bunch of tickets. Go 4X4 you're our only hope for a better world.

Well, that was nice. Thanks BBS. I'll tell you what. If I was the guy in charge of designing roads in Calgary, there'd be a few major changes. First of all, no more lights on overpasses. Secondly, no more deconstruction of cloverleafs and reconstruction into overpasses with lights. Third, speed limits on large roads based on visibility and straighness.

IS that too tough for you, BBS? Thanks for the bull**** post, but anyone that has a drivers license in the city of calgary knows exactly WTF I'm talking about.

Get back under your rock.

Heh, while I'm in rant mode...

BBS, what's with the hit and run? You're offline now? Just took off your gloves, took a swing and ran?

Do oyu have a drivers license? Have you driven in Calgary? Are you one of those ######s that gets all erratic and needs to switch lanes NOW, only to turn 5 blocks later? Are you one of those freaks that cuts poeple off to get into traffic only to turn a block later?

Yes I've seen you before. You're the guy that doesn't know how to drive. You're the guy that never learned driving etiquitte. You're the guy that does not comprehend the physics of large metallic objects moving at high speeds, and how to go with the flow.

Guy, if you've got any experience driving Calgary, or western canada, you'll know what I'm talking about. Until then, back under your rock.

I hope your driving skills are better than your reading skills, or you can prove me wrong by pointing out where I was trying to "weasel out" of the ticket.

In Calgary, don't bother asking how, its just a typical speeding ticket
Thanks to the people who shared their experience and some tips to lessen the severity of it, if I can, I'll do it for sure. Its idiotic to not go try those things, and its idiotic to tell my parents if they won't find out. "Oh I just got a ticket, oh I know..now I'll screw myself over by telling people who can make life tougher for me...they wouldn't have found out anyway. Yeah I'll go tell them right now!!!" LOL LOL LOL....I'd like to know how you guys that are saying that came up with that.

LOL. He blasts me for accusing him of wanting to weasel out of his ticket, then in the very same post he says that he'll try to weasel his way out of the ticket if he can..

While I agree with pretty much everything you say, BBS does have one point. There are certain enviromental issues around that area that I think would lead to a lower speed limit. Its rather hilly around those parts and the grade of the road still gets kinda steep in certain spots and if memorys serves, its not properly lit yet. I suspect we will see that speed limit increase when the road as a whole is finished.

You are bang on with regards to lights on bridges, I mean, WTF is up with that? You build a bridge to speed up traffic only to put lights on it to slow it down? I too question some of the road engineering in this city. Have for years.

/ducks from the wrath of BBS
