As much as you're way intrigues me, Incin, I think I'm the opposite. I love having no plans, no time limits, no restraints. Of course I run the risk of not seeing EVERYTHING, but meh. That gives me a reason to go back some day. I love surprises and if a few things go wrong or get screwed up along the way, well, that's just one more story to tell!

This spring/summer will be first time travelling independently, and I think I'll just wing a lot of the details. I have a lot of time during my trip, and a flexible schedule, which I think will work best for me.

I wholeheartedly agree, it's a beautiful country we live in, from a tourist's perspective anyways without all the politics and the daily grind slaving for the taxman. The Vancouver Island is one of my favorite retreats in the world. Now I'm not a pro like Neeper but I'll share a couple shots, heavily downsized and compressed, from my el cheapo Pentax haha:

This was May 2005 when I blew my season tickets $$ during the lockout on a week out on the coast.

Hockey? What hockey? How can you remember any troubles in life when you're waking up to this every morning?

Nanaimo, this is where I want to retire, in those condos, facing the water:

Theres no sun in tofino.

My parents are looking to take the whole family down (ages 21, 23, 49, and 50) for a California trip this summer. Mostly just somewhere peaceful to soak up the rays. (Definately not anywhere near LA) Any ideas?

You save $$ on sunscreen that way

I guess Disneyland/California Adventure/Universal Studios are all out of the question for you? Try San Fran if you just want some good eats and want to avoid the huge crowds. The Bay Area is decent too, no games in the summer to catch though haha.

I think that's great, but its worth knowing where you're going and what's there. I don't plan with a rigid schedual, but I like to know about the country I'm going to and what there is. I like to know what's worth seeing, and what's not. If I want to see something else, great, doesn't change "plans."

If you go to Europe knowing nothing, it'll be a bit of a waste. There's so much culture and everything there that if you don't know anything, you'll miss out on one of the biggest parts of Europe.
