Is the plan to play a game this year to burn year 1?

Yes, Francis says in his tweet that he will make his NHL debut before the season ends.

Great to hear this and will hope for the best! As others have said, he's a loto ticket at this point. I'm always quick to think back at Corban Knight--there was a ton of buzz when we signed him. I also think about Ben Meyers a few years back. These UDFA always come with buzz, but feels like they rarely pan out.

Most of the time, these hyped up college free agents don't have noteworthy NHL impacts, but it certainly doesn't hurt to give it a shot.

Abram Wiebe could very likely be playing in the Frozen Four with North Dakota, which goes until April 11. I think it would be more likely he'd be a summer signing. Too late for a Wrangler ATO as well.

But I'm often wrong about these things.

I think more about Connor Mackey. Knight was a guy who got drafted but didn't sign with Florida. Mackey was undrafted like Gross. Same as Poolman the same year.

That said, if you just look at undrafted players and ignore whether they went to college, think about Giordano, Macoun, Mullen,

Really love that Conroy is picking up lots of centers and trying to build some depth. This should play out well for the club IMO.

It's nice that our prospect pool is already feeling crowded.

Especially when we still have 6 1sts, 8 2nds, and 4 3rds to use over the next 3 drafts.

True, but Mark Giordano worked out pretty well for the Flames. Great signing, hope he pans out

Less chance now that the Flames reach for a C in the draft instead of taking the BPA on their list regardless of position?

I wonder which would be better... use them all or use them to try to trade up as close to top of the draft as possible.

I think these guys likely have the upside of 3rd line centers.
The club still needs a true topline center.

Evolution of the Calgary Flames ...

Poor capital / poor drafting
Poor capital / good drafting
Decent capital / great drafting
Great capital / great drafting

Add in some college free agents that are well sought after and you're not adding draft capital but you're certainly adding more lotto picks which has a draft capital equivalency.

Giordano was also only 20 years old when he signed an NHL deal which I think helped his development. If he had gone to college for the next 3 years instead, I wonder if he would have had the same trajectory.

You need quality centres even in a 3/4 line role.

Gross can skate and is good on the dot. He can move up for key draws and park himself in the crease. We'll see how that translates at the next level.

Reschny has a better upside. 2C at least and maybe, with the right wingers, he's a 1C along the lines of Point, Zibanejad, etc.

two-way, two-year deal worth $975,000 per season.

Gross, a Calgary, AB native, is a finalist for NCHC Player of the Year, Forward of the Year and Defensive Forward of the Year following his third season with St. Cloud State University, and first as captain. Gross registered a team-leading 41 points from 18 goals and 23 assists, sitting tied for fifth in NCHC scoring. The 23-year-old excelled in the face-off dot, leading his conference in face-off wins with 489. The local product earned an NCHC Forward of the Week selection in February following a weekend series against Arizona State when he recorded a shorthanded tally in back-to-back contests.

They are really starting to fill the cupboard now that's for sure. Nice signing. The big remaining tasks are to find a way to add more high end talent, and then open up some spots on the NHL roster for next year as it is way too cluttered with average to mediocre veterans, so you can start having an extended look at some of these guys coming into the system after a good couple of months. I'm a bit of a broken record, but Stromgren for example 100% earned a longer look but there were just no minutes to give him as the wing on the big club is incredibly crowded
