And interesting is they may have actually gotten better as a team by going from Jarry to Kulak + Skinner to Girard + Skinner and actually added two second round picks as part of that sequence.
It's a good hockey trade for the Avs, Kulak is better defensively than Girard and you could argue Girard is a bit redundant with Makar/Toews.

For sure it makes sense for the Avs too - they clear some cap space for both this season and maybe more importantly next season.

They do re-balance their d-core a bit Girard might be better overall IMO but Kulak a better fit for what the Avs need right now.

And the 2nd to them isn't that important.

Does anyone think we could pull this off with Hanley? We have the space to do a trade like this. In fact, I would have loved if we got Girard and a 2nd for Hanley/Pachal.

Hoping this sends a message out to contenders that cap space is still the best currency, and we have a lot of it.

Seems like the emergence of Sam Malinsky made Girard redundant. With Makar and Toews, with Burns and Malinsky part of the defence, the Avs decided to shed some cost and add a more stay at home guy with a bit more size.

Seeing Dubas work in Pittsburgh compared to what he did with the Leafs makes me wonder how much of that was Shanahan. Or was he just learning, being an inexperienced NHL GM?

Probably a little bit of both, but the pressure from within the organization and the media to get bigger, stronger, and play with more grit factored into the moves he made with the Leafs for sure.

Yeah pretty good asset management by Dubas, Pens will also have tons of cap space next season. Will be an interesting team to follow this offseason.

I would have rather traded the Lane Hutson pick for Kulak, than do what the Flames did and pick Topi #$#$#$# Ronni instead of taking Lane Hutson.

I'll never get over that one.

Puckpedia now has the trade updated on their site. Colorado has just over 8.7mil in cap space with this trade.
https://puckpedia.com/team/colorado-avalanche

That is just enough cap space for #87 if he is able to return for the playoffs.

Conspiracy theories start!

My goodness. Could it be true?

Would be hard not to become a Colorado fan immediately. I don't know if the Penguins would sign off on trading him, but honestly it'd be the smart thing to do. Not because he's done or anything, but time comes for us all and you get a haul for him while you can (although not sure what Colorado would want to give up).

He wants to do what Lemieux did and only play for the Pens.

I would like to build a time machine so I could go back in time and assassinate whoever coined the term "weaponize(d) cap space".

Finally someone says it.

It makes absolutely no sense.
