Yeah, that's.....not ideal for his long term career plans. This type of surgery is pretty invasive. I wouldn't expect a bounce back next year.
However...this does move his contract closer to LTIRetirement.

Flames seem to expect Huberdeau will be ready for next year but I wonder how sheltered he'll be, and if they'll even play him every night.
If they do end up trading Coleman, this at the very least signals to me that guys like Farabee, Sharangovich, etc won't be moved in the immediate future. Need to be able to ice some kind of roster.

It's a 6-12 month recovery for 100%.
If this was known going back to the offseason as was rumoured / indicated then I don't get why they waited this long to shut him down

Sometimes it’s the players choice to avoid surgery. If he is told it won’t get worse with playing many players choose to believe they can play through it

Huby has been atrocious this season and this helps explain why. Hopefully he can be much better next year.

It’s a bit of a relief though, to know that his crappiness is due to injury, and not because he just plain sucks.

If he is not ready by the beginning of the season, could this affect the Flames' ability to reach the cap floor?

they are under no obligation to LTIR him I don't think, so they can ride out that (situationally) sweet cap hit

It's probably a fairly simple determination that it doesn't really matter if he's on the ice or not given where the team is at now and that even at his best he's 60 point player vs 40.

Again, I seriously question the team's policy surrounding medical affairs, injuries, and sitting players.
We almost ruined Monahan's career.

Isn't this just a typical hockey player? We praise them for playing through injuries all the time being a warrior on the ice and its just the norm.
Pump em full of pain killers and band-aids until they can't play anymore.

Respectfully, we shouldn't be letting the players choose this sort of thing.

If it’s surgery that may end up being a career ender how can you possibly not let the player choose when he has it?

This could also open them up to adding a forward easier in a trade whether a cap dump or a young player. Perhaps we already have a deal in progress for Kadri loosely that includes a winger

I hope Huberdeau can enjoy a physically pain free life after hockey.

Hopefully the surgery goes well and Huberdeau comes back stronger than ever. Explains how he hasn't looked very impactful for most of the season. I, for one, will use this as a reminder not to crap on a player who has consistently shown a lot of effort every night, and then suddenly stops.
Hopefully with a resurfaced hip + Gridin's twine, Huberdeau will have a bit of a bounce-back season next year. Wish him luck.
With Coleman looking like he will return after the Olympic break, I assume nobody will be called up until there are some trades.

If we had known that's all it would take we could have resurfaced his hips years ago!
