Winning creates culture. there's no need to hyper focus on culture. most NHLers are pretty good team players. its a rare, league wide story when there is a locker room problem. You can name on one hand the problem guys in the league. Kane, Tony De Angelo, maybe JT Miller?
|
That's not what culture is about. It's not about being a ‘good team player’ or a nice guy in the room.
Which Flames coach was it who came in, and announced on day 1 that he was going to run practices at game speed and intensity? The veterans were bagged. They were used to practice being a leisurely skate, a drill or two, and maybe a little brushing up on skills.
That's what culture is about : doing the hard parts of the job even when nobody is there to cheer for you. It's hard to build, easy to lose, and not everyone has it.

I bet it's shock going through the room right now. The team last year believed in themselves and it would be hard to adjust to reality this year.
When the last sell-off occurs I hope they get another guy who can chuck em. If they start playing younger guys it would be good to have someone help Lomberg keep opposing players away from the next wave. Gives fans something to cheer about if the team can't score too.

I think the enjoyment, win or lose, will increase if the lineup put young players in more prominent positions and vets trade for decent returns. I’d rather the flames have 2-3 more 1st round picks and roll with Parekh getting #1 powerplay minutes and Zary centering Coronato for at least 10 games.

So would I, but teams are very slow to part with 1st-round picks in a trade at this point in the season. I expect several more weeks of argy-bargy before anything significant happens.

I think the Flames are playing relatively well overall. It is just a constant series of 'hiccups' that costs the games - at least in the last handful of games. They started out rough, that's for sure, but in the last handful I can't say that they have looked terrible, or that it has been a form of punishment to watch them.
For instance, the Flames were mounting a comeback, and had pulled the goalie, but Weegar telegraphs his pass across the blueline with Forsberg right there anticipating it 100%. I saw it, and I am sure everyone saw it, including Weegar just as he released it. Weegar wouldn't do that 99/100, but he did this time, and an EN gets scored, erasing the comeback bid.
It is mistakes like these that i find are costing games. I personally think it is a product of trying to do too much. Last season, the wins came with the hard work, and I think the players were more relaxed. This season, the wins are not coming even with the hard work, and the pressure is on, and everyone is holding their sticks too tightly, and trying to do too much out there. That's how i see it anyway.
Shout-out to Lomberg. I thought he was very effective tonight, especially in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Even drew that penalty.
There are plenty of good things to look at during this game. I thought Cooley was going to be better than what people were assuming (and dreading), but he has looked very good! Kadri is building up his asset value! Nice to see Farabee get rewarded after looking good for so long but so snakebitten - maybe now he can relax his grip a little bit on his stick, and hopefully the goals continue to come for him - that's two in a short span, after being so snakebitten with glorious chance after chance to start the year.
The Flames are losing. This is a 'bottoming-out' year, which in the grand scheme of things means that things will turn around down the road. This is still hockey, and there are still things to enjoy within each game. It isn't all doom and gloom, and I don't think the Flames are even playing that badly. Just egregious mistakes happen that costs the game over and over again.

Even if they aren't one of the better rosters, they're playing so much worse than the sum of their parts, which is the part I find concerning. I don't care that they're losing, but they look truly awful in every way, don't seem to care at all, and don't seem to act like a team. That's what sucks.
|
Yeah. There is something wrong with this team at the moment. It’s not a good roster but it’s also not a worst roster in the league bad.

People say this but it just isn’t true. It’s not any more fun watching 20 year olds lose than it is watching 30 year olds lose. It’s just the slog you have to go through in hopes of winning a lot more than you lose 3-5 years down the line.

After the win over the Rangers, I said the Flames would go on a 9-3-3 run and be in the playoffs by Christmas. It is a distinct possibility I was wrong in my prediction

good result! Then again, I don't feel there'ss any bad result right now (unless we're blown out, that's no fun). Two goal loss with an ENG? Sign me up.

I could see that. Some strong showings that result in losses. Strong win. Seemed like a team ready to go on a win streak. Not this time.

Its not that they lost that disappoints me, its the way they lost that I find disheartening.

It is quite impressive how 'last' the Flames are right now.
.231 points % with the next closest being .364.
It's over, baby.

I can’t wait for all of Team Tank to be utterly confounded and oussed when they don’t get the results they think they’re entitled to, just for tanking. Lots of team tank. Few succeed.

Season is lost, time to play the kids. Parekh, Gridin, Kerins, Bruz into the lineup on Wed.
Who is sitting? Spin a wheel for the vets, because they mostly all suck anyways lol who cares who sits.

You know you can only have 23 men on the roster at one time, right?
Anyway, what's the hurry to throw Gridin and Brzustewicz into this tire fire? Let them play games where winning or losing actually means something.

Experience for the players and entertainment for the fans.
Although I am worried that Huska might zap the goal scoring abilities out of all of them with his boring no offense system.

To be fair, the current approach lead to the Flames being the worst team in the NHL. I don't think there's anything wrong in wanting to try something new.
The previous Flames rebuild also failed, but it was pretty fun having the best line in the NHL in Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm, and then Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk.
At the end of the day 31 out of 32 teams fail each year. It is still a lot more fun competing for the playoffs with a core of 23-27 year olds rather than 31-35 year olds.

I'm still waiting for the rebuild to start. (Hint: the current mandate from above is still "win now.")

Seems like it would be a terrible decision for Hunter and Matvei’s development but I guess there would be the experience they get and also the sense of vengeance against the vets for some fans that may balance that out.
