You'll never see that as long as teams have to make the salary floor.

Isn't there a Carey Price cap hit out there in the ether that we can take on, a la SJ?

It is also an unrealistic view of the viability of recent draft picks making a NHL team immediately after draft. A two-year rebuild already has two of its prized first round picks playing games this year, which is itself remarkable. Both top picks from last year's draft were already NCAA committed so they could not attend training camp.
Some posters really don't have the patience for a rebuild.

Maybe Pietrangelo from Vegas? I can't think of any others offhand.

There is plenty of patience. We just want to see what we have to look forward to when those players are knocking on the door for nhl time, and right now we have several.
What you call "remarkable" is a common occurrence in other markets. Even when they're not in a rebuild (i.e. Toronto is always pushing young kids up through the ranks, even as they try to push for a cup).
We barely make space for ours. And when they get to play (usually after much humming and hawing and excessive caution) they don't get to see ice when the game is on the line.
See Parekh last game. Held out, in favor of "reliable" vets who ultimately lost it for us with their lack of footspeed.
Meanwhile Montreal lets its youth exercise its skill and take the reigns. And where are they? 6-3 on the season.

How can the Flames have the tenth youngest roster to start the season and not be playing young players to the same degree as other teams?

The Leafs have to use players on ELCs to stay under the cap, along with LTIR and all the other usual tricks. With that said, here is the list of players under 20 on the Leafs' roster at the moment:
And here, likewise, is the list of the Leafs' 2024 draft picks on their current roster:
Yes, having two 19-year-olds, neither of them a top-5 pick, on your roster at one time is unusual.

Those players bringing the age down are our reclamation projects and journeymen who don't appear to be making strides or figuring it out here.
Meanwhile the home grown talent that we draft and develop are getting boxed out.
Try thinking about things deeper than ranks on paper to back up your point.

‘Reclamation projects and journeymen’ on the roster: Farabee, Frost, Sharangovich, Bean, possibly Pachal.
‘Home-grown talent that we draft and develop’: Coronato, Zary, Klapka (undrafted), Pospisil, Honzek, Parekh.
Who exactly is being boxed out?

Last three first round picks (not including 2025) at ages 20, 19 and 19 make the team along with Coronato and Zary (only missing Pelletier) and it's box outs?

Arguable, but in my opinion the home grown talent is not being given a great opportunity. They are not given consistent ice time or consistent line mates and partners all because Huska is trying his best to win defensively with a team that will never come close to winning the cup. They are prioritizing short term winning and not long term development.

Yes and no
Honzek has pretty consistent deployment and line-mates.
Coronato is being given consistent opportunity and is clearly thought of as a top 6 guy on this team.
Zary has been awful and isn't earning a bigger opportunity at all.
Klapka has been moved up and down agreed.
And I would like to see them start to up the opportunities for Zayne, particularly by having him take a crack on PP1.
So it's a bit mixed.

Remember when the Oilers gifted their top prospects prime ice time and took the reins off them to play firewagon hockey? And then they had to rebuild the rebuild? And we laughed at them?

Like with Bennett prior, maybe Zary needs some consistent deployment with consistent linemates in a logical position for his skillset.
It was posted that his CF% was much higher playing RW than LW/C. Maybe that's where he belongs.
Klapka looks to be bottom 6, and maybe should remain there, but useful.
Parekh needs to be on PP1, like, yesterday.
Weegar is great, but he's not a QB. Are they trying to score on the man advantage or what?
This coach frustrates me a lot. I do think he's smart, but certain players and deployment decisions he's stuck on make no sense because they haven't paid off all year. Defining insanity in some ways.
